Went to school with her. If you need any solid evidence that we won't have large scale commercial drones in the next several decades, it is her comment that FedEx and UPS would be using drones in 5-10 years. The show was done in Jan 2013. If she says it, I immediately assume the opposite is true.

FAA just announced single pilot/drone aircraft will require 500hrs consolidation. Also, the new crew base for the aircraft will be Flint, MI.

We are talking hypotheticals so anything is possible. I guess in my 1K brain in 2015, I'm assuming this would occur through modification of something similar to what we already have.

So, unless you're thinking they're going to bolt an A-10 cockpit to the front of a 777F, I assuming (I know.... bad) that they're just might be room for an LCA along with the operating pilot.

Considering we use 3/4 pilots to fly 8+/12+ hours now, I also assume if this ever happened we wouldn't go straight down to ONE for those legs either. So, there would probably need to be someplace for the RFO(s) to sit in the cockpit too.

Shoot, unless everyone is going to ride offline to MEM, there might even be a few jumpseats in the cockpit and maybe even courier seats outside the cockpit. But....that's the last brain cell I'm going to waste on this.

Solving this problem is probably just below where to house my unicorn on my to-do list.

Part of the reason Military drones crash at a much higher rate is the design- very light wing loadings make for a very twitchy airplane to land, especially in any sort of wind.


Another problem- they go lost link all the time. That's prohibitive for now in and of itself.

The other thing I believe continues to be prohibitive is hackers and/or terrorists. Every time I see some instance of hacking I feel a bit more job security. If large scale drones are ever implemented I believe it's something hackers/and or terrorists will go after on a regular basis. Either to disrupt, attempt to control, or just jam the datalink or GPS signal.

Europe is far ahead of us in RPA acceptance and implementation. I keep my eye on them to see what the future will bring, personally.

It's possible I assume?

I saw a national news story this week about a "woman fighter pilot" climbing into her F-35 (solo!) for her first flight ... I guess the F-35 doesn't have a 2 seat version so that you have a babysitter in the back seat?
