MD-11 probs @ UPS?

Just recieved info from my UPS bud that the IPA is undertaking a big review of the MD-11 training program in light of the recent incidences.

What's the scoop on this? Is the new fleet of MD's really that troublesome? You're hiring an NTSB Chairman and all...

My personal opinion is that there is not enough flying to go around. Many sit reserve for weeks or months at a time without turning a wheel -- a good deal until you're taking a urine test following an incident. Currency, let alone proficiency, is a major problem.

What's going on with the MD-11's? I didn't know they'd been having problems.

From the IPA Prez...

As most of you know, over the course of the last several weeks, we have experienced a disturbing number of incidents and one serious accident on the MD-11.

These events—coupled with issues we have previously raised with the Company concerning the fleet—have led the Executive Board to take action. After consulting with former National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Jim Hall, we have decided to undertake an immediate and comprehensive review of the entire MD-11 program.

-there ya have it.

Seems like UAL had this problem several years back in SFO with a -400. The incident was treated as a hull loss within the company (although accident occurred), and was the genesis for changes in currency/proficiency for long haul crews.

Yeah, and they have saved countlees lives fron doing so. IMHO, it is possibly one of the most selfelss acts of airsafety in recent history. UAL showed their arse just so someone else may possibly not have the same problem. Maybe other airlines didn't have the exact same problem, but they all dang sure took noticed and did a self review. I doubt in this environment of CYA these days you'll see anyting as extraordinary any time soon.

Respectfully,
