. Work for enough failed airlines until you are too old to be considered for the majors. My life

You weren't very specific about which cargo carriers you would consider. There is a pecking order, just as with the pax carriers and everything in flying as in life. The lower rung will require less networking (or none at all), less flight time, a less stellar resume. The top cargo jobs require as good a resume and networking as the best legacy airlines. To put it in perspective, Fedex hired an astronaut a few years ago and the guy (told me) he was nervous about the interview process. I found that amusing and was glad that at least he was humble enough to be nervous about hiring at Fedex.
If you don't have a bunch of dependents (or maybe even someone who wishes you were around for longer periods) and you are building experience, consider the entry level cargo/charter operations. Just be mindful of the internal pitfalls of some of them. You don't want to stain your work history, you want to enhance it. Good luck.
