Now-defunct canceled check operators ?
I was asked the other day by a colleague on the status of "Star Check" an old KADS cancelled check operator.
Are they still around ? Any similar companies that are now ceased ops ? We "old guys" were fondling remembering the early 90's and NAFTA-boom days, especially the ramp at KLRD |
Update: OK wikipedia says yes they still exist. But maybe I got the company wrong, the one I was talking about was Bonanzas and Barons. You had to fly a Bonanza for 6-12 months then "move into" or "promote into" the Baron.

I believe it was Airnet. One out of DAL by the name of Telesis that flew Barrons. The one out of ADS was Cirrus Air. They got rid of all their airplanes sometime around 98 and used Ameriflight to do the DAL-MSY. I used to do it. Not sure who they used to do the rest of their old network. The owner of Cirrus was a complete D'bag. Had a couple of incidents with him that were memorable-almost 20 yrs later. Not to mention that they used to charge $4k to get checked out in a 402 (or a Barron) in '95-'96. I never worked for Cirrus but did indirectly through a contract. |

I think you might be talking about two different companies.

Good info. Who was the operator that crashed a Baron after TO from Love
I worked out of LUV for a couple of different companies and heard many "stories". (If you are reading this and worked for Ari-Ben Aviator in ADS, then screw you because all that crap is true.) |
Worked for FLX for a hot minute some years ago. They flew 210s and Barons (although towards the end the Barons started going away). Then they were purchased by Bayside Capital (which also owns/owned Airnet) so there was a bit of a mini merger.
Haven't thought about them at all for awhile now, but I just googled them and wikipedia says they are still around flying, but the C210s and Barons are gone. Looks like its mostly C208s, Lears, and Navajos now. There was another company used to do check-hauling as well out of RDU, I believe it was called Ram Air Freight. I never worked there, but met quite a few people that did. I think they flew Piper Lances and Senecas. Last I heard they still operated an Avionics shop, but a google search didn't reveal anything. |
I flew for Ram Air for about 2 years. '96-'98. We had cheetahs(mostly for local day runs in NC) lances/cherokee 6s and 55/58 Barons. Not a bad place for some good experience. Pay was terrible, but I wasn't there very long. I lost touch with them years ago. The last time I visited was 2001 when I worked for Midway. Most of the day stuff was gone. They were doing traffic watch with the small singles then.
