MD-11 FMS Gotcha's

Not really an FMS gotcha but a GCP gotcha.... If you are descending on the A/P after pulling level change then decide to hand fly it and click off the A/P make sure to flick the V/S wheel down to get the speed on thrust instead of pitch. If it's speed on pitch and you pull the nose up you'll find out about the MD11's nifty low speed protection system! Years ago I saw one of our non-union boneheads (he had a corvette with THXALPA plates) make this mistake.

It's FRENCH!
I went through MD-11 training at the McDonnell-Douglas facility in Long Beach. According to their engineers, the MD-11 FMS software is the A330/A340 software modified where necessary for the MD-11. Maybe that explains some of the backwards logic when programming the FMS (it's really FRENCH!)

Having flown both (you have not) The Bus sucks. You have to watch the FMS on the BUS 100% of the time ... it will screw you any where anytime. Too many gotchs to list. It almost never works right.
Enjoy OMA and I'll suffer through my 52 hours in Paris. I hear Jaylo kicked your butt!

Maybe the MD FMS was designed to autotune the ILS at 25NM from the field because you can't legally intercept most localizers outside of 23 miles. If you are asked to track the loc at 35 miles, I like to use nav for the initial intercept to final, since it does such a fine job of rolling out with the correct crosswind correction (much better than s-s-ssssing down the loc intercept).

Start 3-1-2
Not an FMS question, but why do we start #3 first? I understand that you press sys 3 w/the aux pump prior to start, and the only thing I can come up with is engine 3 powering hydro system 3 for brakes.
Anybody with the "official" answer?

I have never flown the MD-11 but have flown numerous FMS aircraft none of which could you program a step climb. Although the computer knows your current weight, altitude, temperature and winds it cannot accurately predict these factors as you climb. In a climb, it is restricted to thrust and airspeed limits. In a descent, you can vary thrust (idle to max), airspeed (within limits) and use the always handy speedbrakes to make an altitude restriction. Hope that answers your question
The procedure for programming step climbs is in the Boeing FMS Guide, cruise seciton, page 40.49 Works good, lasts a long time.
