If you are junior, it's not necessarily true for anyone. If you are stuck on a carry in line and at the bottom of the heap seniority wise you are stuck with whatever scheduling gives you.
I am junior and just did over twenty days. No choice in the matter. Next month may be better, or more of the same. I was rewarded by deadheading back to Anc. Should have been about 8 hours OT, instead "0" block time paid because you don't receive DH pay during the first year.
The company line seems to be that because there is no training bond, DH pay is not authorized in the first year.
It's a job and I needed one. Hopefully things will improve. Luckily I have a very understanding wife that does okay with the long trips.

"guaranteed days off" does not mean that you'll get them. They can and will use you on those days, however they have to pay you extra for them. I am about half way up the FO list so I wouldnt call my self "junior" and almost every month I have less then 10 days off. I am stuck on carry-in lines so that may account for it, I dont know.

Will the new class help? I dont think it will due to the number of FO's either leaving or upgrading and the fact that we are a low cost carrier and that means under staffing.

Is SA a bad place? No, I think its an average ACMI carrier. If family is important to you do go to a long haul ACMI carrier, go to a regional and work your way up to 14 days off on a day trip line. However you wont get the experience you will here.

Boy, After reading these posts about SA, I'm glad I turned down their offer I received a few weeks ago for their next class.

Why doesn't the UNION take action on any of these complaints?:??

The pilot group (its not a union) does not have a grievance process so there is almost nothing they can do. The Pilot Group leader is working very hard, but it is in the company’s best interest to keep it toothless. I believe that the only reason that we have any thing is that it is required by one of our various ACMI contracts.

Try this on for size. The company kept me out on the road and took 3 of my 10 days off away, ok fine. After getting home for 2 days and just recovering from jet lag scheduling called and wanted to Junior me to leave that night for MIA to get my Visa. So for the month I would only have 2 days off because according to them I had to do all of the leg work to get my Visa in MIA. Do you think the boys at CAL or UAL loss half of their days off running around doing paper work for the company?

How yeah, and did you know that 121 Supplemental International doesn’t have duty limits? So they wanted me to Deadhead for 18 hours then operate for another 6 hours. Sound Safe? Sounds like a violation. A lot of the guys here get their rocks off acting like big dawgs saying that your not a man if you say your fatigued after sitting on the plane for 15 or 18 hours and then fly across the Pacific for a duty day of 28 hours. Try making a cross wind landing with wind shear, and snow in ANC after being up for 28 hours.

All I have to say is “not safe at any speed”. The company is a one crash airline that is trying really hard for that one crash… lord just let it not be me.

IndyAir,
In case your haven't figured it out already, when you are on days off do NOT answer the phone. Nothing in the contract says that you have to.

It's funny, when I was over at Focus Air, all the guys that had left Southern were telling me how great Southern was compared to Focus.

I knew Focus was bad, but didn't know it was that bad....

Caller ID works wonders !!

I had called them about trying to get some of my days off back and they said they needed to call me back about it. Next thing I knew they got me. I learned my lession, no communication with the company on my days off no matter what. Sorry to sound so bitter... but I am. I blame 18Wheeler for this, after all his posts sounded so nice.

Indy Air,
I am sorry you feel that way. My only reason for posting was to state the facts. Other readers had posted things that were not true or purely rumors.
Granted I may have been overly optimistic, and unfortunely very few things have improved with the new contract. I too, would rather have the days off.
You will notice earlier in this thread that I have included numerous new facts that have gotten out of hand in the last several months. I know it does you no good, but our postings will be helping others now.
Again I am sorry if I misled you. Look on the bright side you are gaining valuable experience working for a supplemental doing international ops. I also hope the next class (those poor bastards) will take some of the pressure off of you.

For those of you that have not been paying attention: When working for any Supplemental carrier, NEVER answer the phone on your days off.

These words should be tatooed on the back of the hand used to reach for the phone:
