Bigjet,
I don't know what the requirements are, but the first FE upgrade that I know of is to start training next month. It sounded like he had to jump through a lot of hoops and was delayed several months for unexplained reasons.
The company has been not been very warm to the idea of moving from FE to FO and it sounds like he will be setting a precidence.
My suggestion would be to find a company that is more open to the idea than here.
And from the way that they have been abusing FO's here recently I would look somwhere else.

Ouch!!
Item to seriously consider before accepting a position with Southern Air.
1. Scheduling department is the worst of the worst:
A. Deadheading into trips is common.
B. Because you are first year pay and they do not pay deadhead pay for the first year, you will deadhead a lot.
C. They will schedule you for a trip even if it will set you up for a violation.
D. They will lose you, then call your home when you are on the road. Your wife will love that.
E. They will leave you sitting in a hotel when other crews are coming and going. New record in Seoul is over 12 days.
F. Line that you bid on and were awarded is null and void after the first day of the month.
G. They will change your Guarenteed days off without your consent so they do not have to pay you day off pay.
H. Schedule new FO's for IOE with Captains that are not Check airmen.
I. Schedule qualified FO's with Check airmen on an IOE lines and have FO needing IOE deadhead on the same airplane.
2. Maintenance:
A. Anything that can be deferred wil be.
B. Deferral will not be acted upon until the last day.
C. Many talented mechanics but Norwalk doesn't give them the time or resources to fix things properly.
3. Three different Navigation systems to know and love. Navigation error/ violation waiting to happen?
A. 6 planes with CMC/FMS. Note: even these have variations in their software and capabilities.
B. 2 planes with Litton 92's- No GPS updating.
C. 1 plane with Carosel INS's with PMS. No GPS updating.
D. Airplane #10 unknown nav. system.
E. They have an STC to install FMS's but are not doing it. One just came out of heavy check and still has Litton 92 in it.
4. Pay:
A. No matter who you work for you need to check your pay stub for accuracy. Here that goes double.
These are the facts: You decide.

Amazing what one can learn from these posts.
As someone who is still dreaming to go fly 747's, I was actually considering looking into this company.
I'm curious if there are any Kalitta or Evergreen drivers around who would like to comment some comparisons.
Sched's setting you up for violations, leaving you in a hotel, no DH pay the first year, etc. Are there any common denom's here?? Is this what I should expect??
I realize that regardless of where ever you go, there will be crap to deal with on any particular level.
Not trying to deviate the origin of the post, just curious as what to look out for in my search to go fly the whale.
With over 2500 trbn pic, I've been advised to sit tight in my current corp job and try for brown when (and thats a quest. in itself) the option opens, which is looking more and more like a better plan.
My hat is off to 18wheeler for stepping up to the plate and delivering the gouge.
Any takers for some comparison info?

Connie at least put all fms/glass adi and hsi cockpits. Scheduling used to be similar and is now improving (for the most part). Pay is always acurate and on time. Days off are guaranteed. Mx is a mixed bag-most guys seem to be trying to do a decent job.

I have to agree and looking to move more toward KA. Would like to know more about Focus, Evergreen, Tradewind and Atlas. Any insights?

Kalitta has really turned around, for the most parts a great group of guy's and a very tight family.
The new contract should be done within a week or so, CAAS is right around the corner, 2 weeks I am told.
The paychecks are always on time and its up to you if you want to work more than the 17 days.
They are going to hire 140 guys this year with 3 more a/c coming soon.
We were also told of the new 747-400's that may be coming on the property next year, along with a 400 sim.
So far, I like it at Connie, glad I said no to Southern.
