Ups A380

UPS to make announcement this weekend, maybe Friday Afternoon.

Pilot7576 02-15-2007 08:44 AM

Nash...

What is your source on this one?

What is the news, that you are taking over FDX'S cancelled orders?

Nashmd11 02-15-2007 08:45 AM

I can't say. But he is pretty far up the Food Chain.

If there making an announcement, my guess is it not good news for Airbus. We already know that they ordered.

Precontact 02-15-2007 09:50 AM

More 747s or are we going all in with the 380?

Freighter Captain 02-15-2007 09:53 AM

I will predict that the A380 cancellation rumor is wrong.

The procurement manager told another pilot while riding the jumpseat that so far we plan on taking the A-380 due to the slot restrictions out of China.

IF those spoken words can be trusted!

jungle 02-15-2007 12:28 PM

This reminds me of the outright denial of any new aircraft purchases just before the 767 buy was made public.
I say the White Elephant bites the dust shortly.

UPSFO4LIFE 02-15-2007 02:05 PM

I am telling you. Go with the A330..

Precontact 02-15-2007 03:02 PM

I have this strange feeling that we're going to order the A-380F. Lufthansa is bringing one to JFK and IAD soon. http://www.flightglobal.com/articles...nsa-visit.html

I wouldn't be surprised to see it make a pitstop at SDF as well. Airbus is desperate for some good news.

It better do a touch and go cause it ain't gonna fit on the existing taxiways.

Precontact 02-15-2007 03:36 PM

True, I don't really think it would fly to SDF, but it would be cool. They've planned those two visits out thoroughly.

All these managers can do is parrot what their masters tell them. If we cancel, the next time you run into that guy he'll be telling you what a p.o.s. the 380 was.

Soyathink 02-18-2007 12:47 PM

It's almost the end of the weekend and no announcement. Did they forget or is your source rooting for Dale Jarrett at Daytona?

brownie 02-18-2007 01:08 PM

It's postponed until tuesday
mon is prez day

I heard the 380 is no more for us. But you know how rumors go.

Precontact 02-18-2007 01:19 PM

Thinking more 747s? Maybe 747-8s? 777s? What do you guys think?

767pilot 02-18-2007 01:26 PM

Time for the big Tupelov announcement

I heard it was an AN-124 announcement at first but then Boeing countered with a C-17. They claimed the C-17 would have the same type rating as our MD-11
:D :D :D

I'll bet a round at sticky fingers that we have 777's on the books by the end of the month, its hot off the press in CRK.

Nice, but itsn't the line sold out through 2012?

PAX2Cargo 02-18-2007 08:22 PM

I say the 380s get bagged and 747-8s on the way.

That would make the most sense. The point of the A380 was to reduce congestion at large hub airports by flying a large load of pax. As a cargo jet, it can be used on high volume routes, especially with a restricted number of solts. But if you ask me, since the A380 needs twice the separation as anything else in the air for wake turbulence (10 miles instead of 5), the A380 should require 2 slots to land...

Unless this changed recently, the A380 requires a 200' wide runway. The US carriers were pushing the FAA to reduce that to 150'. If they do/did pull that off then it totally messes up the taxiway situation when it is operated. I don't have my charts handy but does anyone know if JFK and IAD have 200' wide runways?

ERJ Jay 02-19-2007 10:17 AM

Well, AMA does :-)

A330Checkairman 02-19-2007 10:42 AM

A380

i go to a380 school next year and this has been a huge point of discussion

so far in the US..JFK SFO LAX ORD MIA all have 200' wide runways....

interesting that MEM SDF and ANC all only have 150'.......

the bigger issue for the pax ops is the taxi ways and terminals.....

(IAD is only 150') btw....

cheers
a330

Don't know about the runway, but SDF had already allocated the money to widen the taxiways for the 380.

Orders vs. Options

Just remember that a CNX order does not mean a CNX of the options. FedEx still has 18 options if I'm not mistaken and I think UPS will keep there options on the books too. IMHO:confused:

I'll be the first to admit that I rarely know what I am talking about (or so the little missus has always been kind enough to remind me), but significant announcements usually occur after the market closes for the day.

ryane946 02-20-2007 10:46 AM

Denver has one that is 16,000 X 200.

My source suxs! Actually, it was a Chief Pilot on my Flight last week. We were all shooting the **** when the subject of the A380 came up. There was a big wig meeting in SDF last week. Rick B and all his men. The chief pilot said there was "news" about that coming out very soon. And just smiled. He implied within a week.

UPS, Airbus Revise A380 Agreement

Press Release

LOUISVILLE, Feb. 23, 2007 - UPS (NYSE:UPS) and Airbus signed an agreement yesterday that sets out a timetable for deciding the status of UPS's order for the freighter version of the A380. The agreement specifies changed delivery dates for the A380F and provides for possible termination of the original purchase agreement by either party later in 2007.

Deliveries of UPS's first 10 A380s were originally scheduled to begin in 2009 and run through 2012.

"UPS's decision to purchase the A380 freighter was based on a lengthy evaluation of our future network needs to meet customer demands across a variety of global trade lanes," said Bob Lekites, UPS's vice president of Airline and International Operations. "Those needs still exist and UPS has been carefully evaluating various options since Airbus announced production delays late last year. This agreement will provide us additional time to evaluate our network requirements and make a decision once and for all as to how best to ensure service to our customers."

Daniel Larusso 02-23-2007 05:14 AM

So basically they're keeping it, but have gotten Airbus to agree to an out if they pooch the latest delivery schedule. Seems like a smart hedge, as was FDX 'cancelling' but keeping their options.
