Southern Air Jumpseat help

Hey there,

The info on the Southern Air website is kinda old, and the 3 month flight schedule is from 2015.

Can anyone help me with finding a flight? I need to go to HKG and must be there no later than the 29th of October at 0900 local time. (I think this would be 0100Z on the 29th.)

I see the 2 primary routes to HKG are either LAX-LEJ-HKG or CVG-BAH-HKG. If someone could me times and which flights would get me in on either the 28th or before 0900 on the 29th, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, any insight on jumpseating on Southern? Not much info on here. Should I bring my own food, is there wifi, how is the seating?

Many thanks!

My info is a bit dated, but I can answer a couple questions.

The seating is four "business" class seats. They recline 75%. A sleeping bag is a good idea. There are power outlets, but no wifi. They should board catering for an ACM, so you do not have to bring your own food, but you may wish to do so. The catering is ok out of the states, but somewhat less so out of LEJ or BAH. When I was there I would pick something up from the layover to eat on board maybe every third trip. You will have access to the galley ovens, so if you do grab a frozen dish from the supermarket, you can heat it up. The galleys have chillers to keep the food fresh. They carry a metric **** ton of cokes, juice, and water.

CVG-BAH is about 13 hours, you'll sit in BAH for maybe 4 hours, then another 9ish to HKG. LAX-LEG is similar, but LEJ-HKG is also a 13 hour trip. Make sure your laptop or ipad is fully loaded with a season or two of your favorite tv series. Binge watching is what you do on that kind of trip.

Riding Southern to HKG is the long way around, you may be better off looking into an Atlas or Kalitta jumpseat and flying nonstop the other direction. You could save ten hours or more.

Kalitta flies CVG-ANC-HKG on Sundays, that might be a quicker option for you. It leaves CVG at 2055Z and arrives in HKG at 1610Z +1

Atlas has a couple options departing on the 27th. LAX-ICN-HKG, dep 0545Z arr 0015Z the 28th with a 2 hour stop in ICN. CVG-ICN-HKG, dep 1005Z arr 0640Z on the 28th with a 3 hour stop in ICN.

Awesome, that is probably what I will do then. Is there wifi on Atlas? I swear someone told me one of the cargo carriers has it.

Thx

They most likely have a hotspot or something that is cellular based, but nothing that is on an open network for the crews and supernumeraries to use.

Wifi? There's no wifi on freighters! Really? How about just the availability to get a free ride to where you want to go? Isn't that enough? Seeing if food is available is one thing and it is a logistical issue, but wifi? Bring movies with you on your PED's. Sorry, you'll have to rough it with no wifi if your jumping on a freighter.

You want wifi, jump on a pax bird.

Some perspective please.

Also Atlas does LAX-HKG at least once a week. It seems kinda inconsistent though
