Default IPA hotline msg.

Hello folks, this is Tom Nicholson with the EB Hotline for Saturday, September 3rd.

This week the membership sent a strong and clear message to UPS management. In a virtually unanimous voice, our membership said a loud "NO" to the Company's contract proposal.

You said "NO" to outsourcing our jobs to foreign carriers. You said "NO" to a pension plan that substantially lags our nearest competitor - FedEx. You said "NO" to a 1000% increase in medial benefits. You said "NO" to a pay structure that fails to recognize the productivity and value of the pilot group. Together, we have strongly said "NO" to second class citizenship at UPS.

Our message is being heard. On Thursday, representatives of IPA spent the day in New York City discussing the strike vote results with a number of major media outlets and highly respected contacts in the financial community. They applauded our decision to temporarily stand down in our pursuit of a release from mediation given the national tragedy unfolding along the Gulf coast of the United States.

Increasingly, major UPS shippers know that the labor dispute at UPS is not going away until the pilot contract is resolved. The investment house of Bear Stearns announced results of a shipper's poll showing that 73% of UPS customers are concerned about the progress, or lack of progress, in the UPS pilot negotiations. A full 26% of major UPS shippers would immediately divert their business to other carriers should a release be granted by the National Mediation Board. A whopping additional 36% would head for the exits 2 weeks into a 30 day cooling off period.

UPS is literally playing with fire. The consequences of the Company continuing to stonewall this pilot group are profound. Next month will mark the fourth year of negotiations. The time for UPS delay tactics are over, and the time for responsible management of these talks is at hand.

Prior to this week's vote, all eyes were on the pilot group. Today, that attention and focus is shifting to UPS. Focus is now turning to Atlanta. Will one of the most successful transportation giants in the world derail their own growth by mismanaging labor relations with a group of 2600 pilots? Or, will the Company realize that the cost of their strategy is not worth the risk? It is time for UPS to constructively engage the pilot group in meaningful negotiations. All eyes are on Atlanta.

In the meantime, our pilot group is focused on doing our part to alleviate the suffering associated with the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. Over 300 IPA members have volunteered since Thursday to fly relief missions to the affected region without pay. We have developed a database of these volunteers and will be prepared to offer UPS donated pilot labor on all fleets and seats for any and all Katrina relief flights.

If you have not yet called the Association to volunteer, please consider doing so. If you are interested in volunteering contact Mary Finch. Working together with the Company, we can significantly assist many of the victims of this profound national tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected.

Well folks that wraps it up from here for this week. The next EB Hotline will be on Saturday September 10th. Until then fly safe, be professional and remain united.
