AT LE$$ management just released a statement declaring that Florida West is being shut down. That outfit has never been anything more than a front for a money laundering operation. Dan McHugh intended to use it as a weapon against the Southern pilots. Bill Flynn wound up with this turd in the acquisition, and briefly considered a similar strategy, but ultimately the whole thing was toxic.

When the shutdown occurs, what happens to the operating certificate?

The operating certificate is either sold or turned in to the FAA.

Don't be surprised to see Amazon to buy the FW cert. on the cheap. They might want to use it at some point to start their own airline.

That seems unlikely. Something in the archives of my memory says you can't just grab an operating certificate and keep it in your back pocket for a rainy day. You must also have the required key management personnel in place. I seriously doubt the FAA would give exemptions to put a couple of mid-level managers with zero applicable experience on the certificate, and I can't see them shelling out a couple million for people with the necessary experience to shuffle papers in the basement until Bezos decides one way or the other.

Thats correct. To have an operating certificate you also must meet some of the requirements for management personnel, etc.
