Sao Paulo, Brazil

I've been there a bunch, never had a problem with safety & security. If you plan to venture out at night, especially after some adult beverages, that's when you are most vulnerable.
Most unfortunate cases happen with a solo individual walking back after a few drinks. Yes, there have been things that have happened right in a daytime coffee shop. Just turn your S.A. up a few notches and you 'should' be fine.

Great City But Be Careful
Taxis can be "OK" but use one that the hotel gets for you. If you walk the streets at night, go in a group.
I don't know about the girls. There are a lot of expats in Sao Paulo and we used to hang out at the Lone Star Cafe, run by a local who married a woman from NY and owned a restaurant in the city (NY) for years. A lot of Americans and Europeans there.
Great city but keep your eyes open !
