Default MEX and GDL layovers

My company used to have 24hr layovers in MEX and GDL but stopped a couple of years ago saying it was not safe. Now we do all night turns from LAX and SJC. Does any have regular layovers there? Where do you stay? How long? Do you have time to go out and explore? Any security issues?

I always enjoyed them and never felt threatened. I always went out and explored.

Thanks

yup, my buddy of mine from SKW, had a layover in Queretaro, both of the crew were rob on the way to have some dinner, they were beat with a gun, and now they are not flying anymore. its a sad thing to find out that happened to them

so be careful when you go out in Mexico, If I am you, try to lay low, or just stay in your hotel room!

Stick to the Hawai'i layovers.

I'm sad to read of your buddy's problems in Queretaro. I spent a long time there in the 90's, and never had a single problem, even when out on my own.

I just did an entire month in QRO spending 2 nights a week there. We would get in late and I would take the crew for tacos after midnight. I feel very safe in the down town area. I always use the hotel van when I can, but have used taxis in the past too. Maybe it was the area in which that particular crew went out in.

As far as other places in Mexico I try not to stand out. I don't wear my big pilot watch or pilot looking leather jacket. The best thing you can do is ask the hotel where the best places to go are but nothing is ever a sure thing.

Dang! Permanently? Are you at liberty to elaborate?

Just went to GDL. Stayed at the Presidente Intercontinental. Not bad. Bed rock solid as usual. Internet didnt work in the room. Nice hotel. Think it is safe around the area?
