How would the QoL be for someone willing to move to MSP. As a 2nd year FO it seems like a pretty good opportunity to get in front of some big growth.

If you like to spend more nights in your own bed vs. sleeping in hotels there aren't many places that offer more than Sunny if you live local. As a new hire you will be used about 50 percent of the time on reserve and there are more day trips than most airlines for when you are a line holder. I'm sure more multi-day trips will become the norm as we expand to different markets. But for someone living local, QOL is tough to beat. We may not have industry leading pay, but we do have industry leading parking!!...

Can somebody else corroborate this to make sure it's not a disgruntled comment? Not saying it is. Asking for a friend.

At this point in time it's not a commuter friendly airline. That could change... But frankly, I could not imagine commuting to reserve at SY.. that has to be absolutely brutal. You only get 10-11 days off depending on the month, with two day blocks off at a time and one 4 day block. So, expect to be home like 5-6 full days a month.

When you're a line holder, you can definitely bid the multi-day trips which tend to be a little better for commuters... Not that much better though. Currently, most of the multi-day trips consist of back to back 2 days or 3 days. Meaning you'll spend a night in between trips in MSP on your own dime. Some multi-day trips even have a couple day trips scattered throughout your month. So even as a line holder, you'll be spending a minimum of 2-3 days a month in MSP on your own dime.
Lots of trips are not commutable at all (start early, end late), and some are only commutable on one end.

I commuted in the regionals, and I remember that being a heck of a lot easier than what our guys are having to do.

With all that said... if you lived in MSP; it doesn't get much better... In that respect, the schedules are pretty good in terms of giving you lots of time at home.

SY is definitely in a transition period... who knows what it'll look like in a year. If you want to gamble that schedules will improve for the better then give it a shot! I will say that you probably won't find a better group of guys and gals to fly with.

And as far as pay.. maybe I'm just an optimist.. but when everyone around us is getting paid, I think our time is coming. And for what it's worth, our guys obsess with pay rates. I agree to an extent... they absolutely need to go up. But when it comes time to negotiations I sure as heck hope we don't focus on only pay rates. In my opinion that should be the third or 4th item on the priority list. But that's a whole other conversation.

For the guys that came over as captains from the regionals, how long does it take to get back to making your regional captain pay?

They say upgrades are 2.5-3 years. Last summer is when the wave of hiring began. The last bid put the new wave 20-30 away from upgrading. They haven’t even been on property for a full year.
Upgrades will be going well below 2 years starting next year, if that helps.

Second year pay in the right seat here already beats four year captain pay where I came from, but I never was a captain at my previous regional so it was just a nice raise for me.
