Here is my humble attempt at re-routing the current "other" conversation happening on the Atlas Hiring thread.

At a previous carrier, we worked 13-14 days a month, and enjoyed doing open time now and then as long as no one was on furlough, but at here, with 17 days + 1-3 extra days for travel to base(depending on No. of trips), there is no stomach for ANY open time. If there was 14 required days, people would be more interested in doing open time. The company discourages it by the horrendous waste of crewmember time-value by having people spend DAYS on company deadheads, taxis, hotels, taxis, then more deadheads. Once the crewmembers are "in transit" the company apparently forgets that current&qualified 747 pilots have a time-value. I unscientifically WAG-estimate they could get by with a couple dozen less crewmembers and a 14-day schedule and still save money.

Thanks a bunch Worldfr8! Your invaluable insights relating to career guidance with Atlas are always appreciated and well-placed. I definitely think this thread could thrive concurrently with the other and offers a comfortable alternative...kinda like having a two-party political system

Question on the travel. If you live near your base, then drive there, you are going to be gone for say 17 days in a row. But if they fly you to your base; its outside of the 17 days? Is this right? Does this cut into your time off? I am just trying to learn how the sched is working out for the pilots. 17 days on and the rest off-including travel to and from home. How does the sched usually work out?
So that leaves 60 day lines. They are usually 3 trips in the 60 day period although I did get one that was 2 17 day trips in 60 days. For example my July Aug award has me off1 on 14 off 13 on 14 off 12 on 5 off 3.
You are correct that you normally have to travel on days off to get to base (sometimes 2 days to ANC). The JFK base tends to go senior because most trips start with a commercial on the first day from JFK so you can just commercial from home instead and not lose a day off.
So, yes, it generally, cuts into your time off as a junior guy (just as jumpseating to work does everywhere else - but at least here we have a ticket and don't have to worry about getting to work)

I would like to only be working 14 days and making more money - wouldn't you?
(and if we did only work 14 days the guys that we have that seem to like to be on the road all of the time would have more days off on which they could work - so it would be great for everyone!)

Hey thks WorldDC10 for clarifying. So if you live near base, life is a little better.
Like everywhere else i have been reading too that new hires are all going to the 767. Is the only base CVG? How are the scheds like on the 767?
