You cannot sponsor a H1B to a pilot.

And over the past year or so, H1Bs have become much harder to get.

This is not true. AWI has already done this for Canadian pilots in the past. I spoke with a recruiter there and they are planning another intake this year.

Thank you for your email. We are currently accepting some visas and could possibly offer the required assistant to sponsor your visa. If you need a H1B visa, this is done in April each year. Although our candidates for 2018 have already been selected, to be considered for 2019, please apply between October and December 2018. Please keep note the following:

1. You must successfully complete an interview for consideration as an First Officer with Air Wisconsin Airlines
2. At time of hire you must possess all FAA certifications and rating required by the FAA to operate as a commercial pilot
3. Prior to your start, you must obtain all legal work authorization documents qualifying your eligibility for work sponsorship
4. If you have not completed your ATP knowledge exam, you start training in our in-house CTP course that will provide you with the additional requirements (per FAA) to complete the ATP Knowledge exam
5. Your training can begin with as little as 1454 total flight time with all subcategory of time completed to the standard (Please visit our Pilot Calculator at Air Wisconsin Airlines to see how much time you would need to gain)

A requirement of the position is the ability to travel in and out of the United States as we do fly to Canada. For a full list of requirements please see below. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Thanks!

So you guys are not going to do it? I'm confused.
Is this an official account?

Edit: sorry, I just realized that I implied that CommutAir was handing out H1B's ... I copy pasted the post from another thread on the AWI forum because AWI said they were doing the H1B. I tried to edit the original post but cannot figure out how, my apologies.
What do you mean by official account? The person's username? Not becuz the person's username is CommutAir means it's the company's spokesperson/management.

You'll find that pretty much every visa those airlines have sponsored is an E3 for Aussies, not H1B.
The email is also confused and misleading. You cannot do an ATP while in the country with a H1B, H1B is for skilled employees, meaning you already need to hold an FAA ATP to be eligible (read the requirements for an H1B...) The only one that you could imagine they use for pilots is:

"Hold an unrestricted state license, registration, or certification which authorizes you to fully practice the specialty occupation and be engaged in that specialty in the state of intended employment"

So you need to hold a valid FAA ATP, because that is the certification required to be a pilot in a part 121 operation.

I seriously doubt they are able to sponsor a H1B for Canadians in any meaningful numbers. Looking at the stats, the (very) few filings AWI has made are mostly E3 Australian category, they seem to have tried to sponsor 5 in 2017, and unless they got lucky with the draw since they are always oversubscribed, they might have got in 1 or 2. Low enough number to say "no, it's not really possible".
