Default Contract Negotiations

Can anyone flying at C5 comment on when the next round of negotiations might start? I was reading the DEC thread, which I’m considering, but a major road block is the “conditional reserve” you can get assigned at any time and seemingly for any reason. I would hope this practice will be addressed?

Conditonal reserve is usually only when your flying gets pulled for OE and its 90% FOs who get it. As a street Capt you will not get it that often.

Conditional reserve is a battle that’s been waged since I began here six years ago. The company throws that “conditional” out there and it means nothing. But, the contract states that you can be assigned or reassigned within your duty period. Throw in operational need or necessity and it can be a huge PITA. This kind of QOL is where we need to make great strides in our next CBA.

Yes, conditional reserve is a thing here, but I have never been subject to it. Scheduling used to cause that by pulling established / assigned trips for IOE (meaning, after the bid), but now they appear to grab those trips up front and label them "IOE" so PBS doesn't make them available to bidders in the first place.

I would not be concerned about coming here as a captain. Captains are flying like crazy here and likely will be for the foreseeable future as we have received 7 aircraft this year so far (now 37) and the mothership still wants us at 60 ASAP. New FOs on reserve are the ones getting screwed here now. They're simply not flying as much as they were as little as 4-5 months ago as we've hired far more FOs than captains.

This is interesting for y’all. With your negotiations, makes me wonder what’s up with United’s thinking. https://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/united-and-pilots-negotiating-contentious-regional-f-460666/

This won't affect us in the least. We only fly 50 seaters and as it stands currently there is a lot more room for the 50 seat market under current scope (the limiting factor is that no one produces a 50 seat regional jet anymore). Realistically the UA pilots are going to focus on the 70+ seat flying, which more closely resembles mainline flying.

The appendix in the back of the employee handbook has gotta go as well. Essentially, crewmembers are allowed only two sick days per year, both of which count as unexcused absenses. On the third and fourth occurence (sick call), legit or not, the crewmember will be given a verbal warning. Fifth occurence (sick call), a letter of warning in your file. So despite federal regulations telling us not to fly while sick, the company has this appendix in its employee handbook (which doesn't have to be approved by the FAA) allowing crewmembers only 2 sick days per year AND a chief pilot has said that the employee handbook trumps the CBA.....

Out of curiosity, only because this is the first time I’ve seen this....why do we have a chief pilot who isn’t on the seniority list? Ideally, shouldn’t a CP come from the ranks?

Ideally, a Chief Pilot would be (A) Typed in the plane. (B) Possess and be able to hold a first class medical. (C) Perform a certain amount of line flying per 90 days in the aircraft he/ she is typed in, so as to be a successful medium with real operational experience to relate to both management and the pilot group. But when your CP doesn't hold a medical and isn't typed in the plane...how can they relate to something as mind- numbingly simple as a sick call with no repurcussions??

Well, and that’s why I’m asking. I know he used to work here years ago, which is fine, but as you said, and which I agree, the CP office should be a happy median between management and the pilot group. I’ve heard on numerous occasions in just a short time here very negative interactions and exchanges with multiple pilots and AK.
