“Exception one: If the Company establishes a fleet of new small narrowbody aircraft (this is referring to the 717), the number of permitted 76-seat aircraft may increase on a one 76-seat aircraft for each one and one quarter new small narrowbody aircraft (1:1.25) ratio (rounded to the closest integer) up to a total of 223 76-seat aircraft. In the event more than 153 76-seat aircraft are in operation, then on January 1, 2014, and each succeeding January 1 thereafter, the Company will implement its plan to reduce the number of 50-seat aircraft in operation below 348 (the number of 50-seat aircraft in operations as of July 1, 2012) rounded to the closest integer.
Note one: Upon the delivery of a 223rd 76-seat aircraft, the number of permitted 50-seat aircraft will be 125 regardless of the number otherwise provided in Section 1b. 47. e. Exception one”

DC9 to 717 definitely was not a 1 for 1 replacement. The only DC-9s Delta had left at the time of signing the 2012 contract were a relatively small number of DC-9-50s with 125 seats (same as an A319).

Those extra 76 seat aircraft paired with the 717, and now 220’s, have placed Delta in a position to announce that all 50 seat aircraft will be gone by 2023, however United has declined to exercise the same option to free up more big rj’s. Kirby wants them without the expense of adding another SNB. It should be interesting to see how he plans to compete when scope is maxed out and the competition has a superior product.

TI is about to sell the family farm out from under everyone else, but don't worry one bit, he's gonna get that coveted jumpseat priority on SkyWest for you guys that he failed to get last time.

Thats because there were only a handful of DC-9s during the NW/DL merger. The 717 came well after the 2012 contract signing and the merger which unlocked the additional large RJ scope. In my opinion, a move has positioned DL well against its competitors and benefited DL mainline pilots (except for their JV issues).
