Default Evacuating for DOT 3 hour rule

There was a flight earlier this year where ops told the crew to..

They did and here's the result

Now WHY would they pop slides just to avoid the 3 hour DOT fine?? Anyone have anymore info on this insane decision making?

You must be new here. This was a year ago..
And I think they admitted their mistake.. ish.. on the calls. Said the policy is they won't blow the slide anymore to try to avoid DOT3.

Are you kidding me? Posting that photo online?! Poor person that took it and distributed it in the first place.

This happened. Everyone knew, everyone Monday morning QB’d. There turned out to be a lot more to the situation. But blowing the slide was not the proper answer to deal with this.

It is not, and will not be company policy.

I agree, I was a little offended by the slip and slide picture too, I mean, there's no context... I would prefer this one but I'm sure it's just a matter of taste...

It costs 20k to repackage a E170/175 slide. The DOT fine I believe is 27.5K per person or some god aweful number.

This is old news. However, due to the ATL power outage, I heard some aircraft were given the order by a big southern airline as there were about 100 aircraft waiting for gates with no power...can’t confirm how true this was or if anyone did it but I think the rolled in airstairs at the last minute.

I'm pretty sure the DOT rule doesn't apply in uncontrollable situations like a power outage. I mean really what do they expect everyone to do at that point, there's only so many air stairs.
