SMF To LAX Commute

Hey all,

Does anyone do this commute? Doable? Sorry for what may be a basic question but is LAX a base that would be attainable as a junior FO?

Thanks

LAX you can get out of training. SMF to LAX is done by a few people here who don't seem to have any issues, it's a pretty easy commute, however SMF to SEA is also an option and pretty easy, there are multiple Compass flights on that route and so you're pretty much guaranteed a seat. You should be set.

That’s encouraging to hear. Are there talks of compass being bought out?

SMF to LAX is probably the easiest commute on the planet. 10+ flights a day and half are Compass, where you can reserve he jumpseat, and also ride the FA jumpseats.

Yup. Pretty much continuously since Delta originally sold Compass to TSH in 2010, including several rumors Delta was going to buy Compass back. Read the old threads if you want the details. Hasn't happened yet though. And even if it did, it'd likely take A COUPLE years before any of the changes filtered down to the line flyers. Alaska bought Virgin a couple of years ago, and their seniority list integration still hasn't happened yet.

Very easy commute. Did it for a few years at CP. Usually about 23 directs a day and 10 or so are on us.

Yes! I do the commute and was able to make it commuteable without using commuter hotels after 2 months of holding a line. Very easy. I rarely use the commuter hotel. First flight goes out at 5am, last flight comes back to SMF at 11pm. I just bid for trips that start after 9:30 and end before 8pm and it works perfect. You can sit in a FA jumpseat on Compass-Delta too. I usually do that to help out another pilot. There’s a lot of commuters from other airlines.

Parking pass situation sucks though... it is a pain to get one. Plan on putting on your charm when you walk in that office lololol some Compass people can get them, while others have struggled to get the lady to issue them one.

Easy commute once you’re off reserve!!

This is great to hear! Thank you for the insight. Being that I am probably years away from getting to a regional what happens if compass got bought out? Does that mean those bases close on the west coast possibly? I’m asking as if I decide to move my family to the Sacramento area my options for regionals are slim pickings.

Any thoughts?

I would highly suggest get the job then move.

The regionals are such a moving target it’s impossible to make a plan that far out. And could change tomorrow.

Absolutely I agree with you. I wouldn’t be moving for the job. I would be moving bc my wife’s family is out that way. My concern is when I am at the hour requirement I have no regionals nearby and have to commute further which I am trying to avoid.
