Default Compass age discrimination

I just received this from ALPA:

We’ve gotten news through our fellow ALPA pilots at Compass Airlines their company may start hiring soon – possibly even by year’s end. A class starting by the end of this year is a possibility.

If any pilots are interested in pursuing a possible job at Compass, please forward your resume to [name and email edited out by moderator] and he will hand deliver it to the chief pilot's office. He encourages you to submit a cover letter with your resume and complete the online application at www.compassairline.com, which is required before any resume is reviewed or interview granted. Currently, Compass is holding to ATP minimums for applicants; in the past they have been flexible on the 1,000 hours of multi time. Anyone seriously interested should complete the application very soon. If the company decides to run a class for December, they may start interviewing soon.

My point to this post is that I am not 23 years old, but I do have ATP mins. Would I be considered for a job at compass? I have all of their mins covered-- aprox 2000 total time, 1300 part 121, 1500 multi, 700 (ish) PIC, etc.

Can compass discriminate by age?

Just curious-- I'm only remotely willing to give up seniority for delusional security, but I am intrigued.

If the government says you need to be 23 for the ATP, then I don't see why a company doesn't have to hire until people meet ATP mins.

It does suck though.

I completely understand your angle, but if the government can put their foot down on racial or gender discrimination, then why not age discrimination...? It really, really bothers me.

Compass seems to be taking it to an extreme-- especially before any significant legislation gets signed into law by Comrade Obama.

My problem is I exceed (by a decent amount) both their required and competitive minimums, except age, but I turn 23 at the beginning of next year, do I have to interview after I turn 23, or can I interview while I'm 22 but not be "hired" until class starts (after I'm 23)?

What I don't want to do is submit my info early and tick them off at me.

Because it's not age discrimination, it only appears that way. In order for it to be a discrimination issue, some individuals younger than 23 would have to be afforded opportunities that others don't get. That's not the case. Every person younger than 23 will not qualify.

It's not discrimination, it's just a law that looks bad to those under 23.

I agree with the previous poster and have no problem with actually being hired etc. etc. when over 23 (and I realize he wasn't addressing me directly as well). As I mentioned earlier my concern is that (especially if your hiring for a pool) why disqualify people who will be 23 by the time you get around to bringing them on property?

Compass had ATP minimums as the new-hire minimum since day one, before any of the recent things that started talks about raising 121 minimums began. So we can now move on from the age discrimination thing.

Well, at first I didn't think the age would be a problem, however I've read that they like to PIC type the new hires with an ATP, so you might just want to send the resume in anyway and see what happens!

Anyone know why Compass is hiring or if they require one to give up seniority numbers?

It is not discrimination if they require an ATP for their operations (they do since they type everybody up front) and the government requires age 23 for the ATP. There are many government jobs (law enforcement and military officer) which have explicit or implicit age minimums.

As for your application...personally I would be impressed at someone your age with those qualifications. I would send in an app and explain your situation in the cover letter. That leaves them the option of:

A. Waiting until you turn 23 to interview you OR
B. Interviewing you now, and delaying your class date until after your b-day.

I can't imagine it annoying them...just don't whine about age discrimination. Nobody would ever take that seriously when talking about young people...it only works on the other end of the spectrum.

It’s not something the company wants to do, it’s in our contract. The Compass CBA requires new hires to meet all of the eligibility requirements for an ATP certificate. All new hires will complete training with an ATP & an ERJ-170/190 PIC type rating, period.

Compass is hiring because of increased aircraft utilization for June and beyond. Looks like we'll be flying in and out of LGA a lot according to a company email. They are not sure if there will be a base there yet though since they don't have the official time table from DAL yet.

As far as resigning your seniority at another carrier, the official policy is yes. I have heard that many have not been asked to do so, and still have recall rights to other carriers.
