Not true for UA. You can walk up to the customer service counter and list on the same day as the flight. I just did it out of Munich on UA a month ago.

The only thing that makes this a tough decision is because you live in a Mesa base.

I worked for Mesa from 2007-2010, and then worked at Compass starting in 2010. Now I'm not sure if the Mesa now is any different than the Mesa when I was there, but the difference between Mesa and Compass was NIGHT and DAY for me.

Compass was hands down a better company to work for. But it seems like Mesa is on the upswing, and living in base will make the job that much better for you. In addition, the new LAX base at Compass might be junior for a while, and that would be a harder commute than MSP.

I will say that I think the upgrade will be quicker at CPZ. Mesa might have some potential to offer a quick upgrade, but I'd say the flow at CPZ which creates a quick upgrade for newhires is a better bet than Mesa's possible growth.

The only thing I would be wary of if you choose Mesa is that while you would be living in base, depending on how hiring is going, it might not be the base you get (from what I've heard almost all new hires are getting CLT and IAD).

Not true about United. I list at the gate outbound and ticket counter inbound back and forth to Shanghai almost every month and have never purchased a ZED. Check the ALPA jumpseat guide.

I'll throw in a +1 for living in base. That is my wet dream. Definitely worth the few thousand you might give up. Drive to work then drive home? Sold.

I have offers from both Compass and Mesa. I'm having a really tough time trying to choose which company to go to.

With Mesa I would live in base, plus I already know the United system. I would also be commuting from Ireland about 40% of the time and the bases offer easier commute options to and from Ireland and Europe. However, the money is bad and the contract doesn't look great. There are some nice little perks such as iPads, but they really play very little, if any of a factor in my decision making process.

The pay at Compass is a lot better, but the bases aren't great and I'm much more likely to be on reserve for a longer period. I'd have to commute from my home in Chicago, although both MSP and DTW are easy commutes. However, for my commute from my home in Ireland none of the bases are particularly easy.

The class I've been offered with Mesa (firm offer, not just the mass emailed offer) is for April. My Compass class is before that.

I have around 2,500 hours, lots of previous 121 time. Really not sure which direction to go.

Any thoughts?

This is a little off subject, but I seem to remember your getting hired by RJET a few months back...are you bailing already?

Wild horses couldn't keep me at that place. It was beyond appalling. Let that be a warning to anyone even contemplating going there. I've worked at several airlines around the world and Republic was the worst run out of all of them by a country mile. I quit on the 4th day of training.

Which airplane were you in class for?

Isn't Mesa often compared to Republic or worse? Certainly on the same level as RAH. Funny how some new airplanes makes people forget that we're talking about MESA.

Living in base is sweet but it's still Mesa...
