Military to Corporate
Hi all,
I'm a couple years out from retiring from the Air Force and my "twilight tour" is flying G-IVs and G-Vs in Germany. Not a bad gig.
I've been giving a lot of thought to life after the Air Force. I'm currently trying to decide between pursuing a corporate flying gig and looking to get hired by a Legacy. The pros and cons of each is a topic for another thread (and one which I'm sure is covered in detail in other threads)... My question is about corporate hiring of prior military pilots.
I had a civilian in my G-IV initial class who said his experience was that corporate flight departments are hesitant to hire military pilots... He was a bit vague on details, but he implied it had to do with the military mindset being a bit too rigid for many corporate flight departments. After searching on this site, I came across a thread from a few years ago that was discussing military hiring in the corporate world.
So, long story short (too late), I'm wondering what the hiring environment is like in the corporate world for military pilots. Thanks in advance for any info!

Your experience will be held very highly in corporate ranks. Don't settle for a low grade position-aim for a Gulfstream of Global job but you'll have to be flexible on location. Have you looked at Gulfstream in Savannah?

I haven't specifically looked at them. I go there every 6 months or so for recurrent training and have contacts at FlightSafety... But flying for Gulfstream seems like it would be a pretty good gig. I have a friend who separated and now flies for Cessna, basically taking potential customers up in their planes to try to get them to buy.

I'm retiring from the 89th next month (Gulfstream guy). Our pilots are being headhunted by Fortune 500 companies but most went airlines. Former OSA types shouldn't have an issue but if you have no VIP experience it might be a tougher road. That being said, flight departments will hire for personality and train for the job. You also have to be wiling to move to where the jobs are (KTEB, KVNY, etc). I would make sure you have a membership to Bizjetjobs and attend NBAA if you can. Also, most places fill jobs short notice so being in Germany may be a challenge for interviews.
