Only crappy 91/135 operators require you to purchase a type rating; a training bond/agreement for 12-24 months is not uncommon but something to be fully aware of.
For flexibility, many 91 operators want PIC-qualified pilots; pure copilot positions can be hard to find and from what I’ve seen are frequently paid under market compensation.
Exceptions abound...caveat emptor.

Im sure there are, somewhere. Where do you live... and can you move? There are some growing charter companies that will probably take you on. But if you have a 121 number, be prepared to forfeit any recall rights if they ask. Its a mixed bag. - former 91/135 dinosaur burner.

JetLinx manages aircraft. So when a new customer brings in an aircraft, pilots are generally needed. Sure, in some cases there are vacancies because pilots find something that suits them better, but usually it's new customers bringing in aircraft.

I am glad I never had to buy one. But certainly I would not blame anyone in doing it.Specially if you want to put the freaking “frijoles” on the table. Tough times to be a pilot.
