Last minute corporate job opportunity...tough choice
I got thrown a curve ball with this one...my boss here at my CFI job brought up the fact that an insurance company across the airport is looking for 3-4 more pilots for their beechjet, citation, etc., and several people from my current company already work there, so hopefully I can get in with them. Apparently they do alot of out and backs, are home often...sounds like a great place for a married guy like me.
Problem is, I've been prepping for the regionals all this time...and one has already received my app...I've been waiting for the call. My wife is definitely for the corporate job...we would not have to move, cost of living here in DAB is low, and I would enjoy staying here in FL. A friend of mine who flies for a charter company in NJ got me turned off from corporate after telling me about his tough schedule, so I've been focused on the regionals. The corporate route sounds better every day though. Anyone who's made the jump from regionals to corporate or who might provide some experience with a similar situation?

I'm sure you can get on with a regional easily, but once you go airline you'll have a stink on you to lots of corporate operations. I would say do the corporate thing for a while, you'll get to see if you enjoy it and have that experience on your resume. You can probably go to a regional anytime but a job like this will present itself very infrequently.

Thanks for the replies...I'm 26, have no kids for the moment, but possible within 5 yrs or so (according to plan. I called one of our old managers who works there today...hopefully will hear back soon. About 20 other senior CFIs I work with interviewed there, but not many got in...I'm not sure why. But lately all the talk of switching bases, commuting, etc. with the regionals got me a bit worried about that path. I just want to live at a domicile and STAY THERE for at least 5 years.

You can't go wrong by trying for the corporate gig since it's right there, right now. If you don't get it, you're already headed towards the regionals anyway.
QOL at corporates in general is all over the scale, but if it's a well established, well run department, it's probably pretty livable, especially if it's a Citation out and back deal. The real question is - why are they looking for 3-4 pilots all of a sudden? Is it growth or turnover? If it's growth, go for it full speed. If it's turnover, I'd want to know what's going on.

Corporate is one of those deals that you should have prior experience and types to get the really good jobs.... you won't get that in the regionals. Go corporate and in 5 yrs if you want to change, you may be able to go somewhere as a direct entry captain.

EVERY CORPORATE JOB IS DIFFERENT!
So make sure you check (like you said you were going too) with people that work there.
Also, if you end up disliking the corp job, you will definitely be able to find a regional job in a few years.
However if you do decide to switch, remember either way you decide to go, it was your choice and your choice alone, do not leave either one in a short amount of time. It's an unbelievably small world, I know of a couple of guys who burned their companies in the corporate world, and their airline chances have suffered as a direct result.

All the above comments provide very sound advice. One thing you must remember is the charter/135 job can't be compared to corp/91. they provide two entirely different lifestyles. Ten years ago at age 28 I was in the same situation however I was already at a regional for 8 months preparing to upgrade when I was faced with a corp gig opportunity. I understand the delima...I chose to leave Mesa (no brainer...I know) and took a right seat job on a CL601. Best decission I ever made. Quality of life improved, pay allowed me to purchase a home (in So.CAL), Start a family....I know with the right company a corporate job is far better than any regional. If the airline job is what you eventually want you can always make the transition. Howevr it is true, it becomes more difficult to transition from an airline job to a corporate/91 job. A little advice, a private corporation usually provides better packages than does a public held company. In my experience.
