Carrying Prist
 

Hey,

Anyone know if it is legal & safe to carry prist cans onboard a part 91 flight to the islands? Seems like the don't have in Jamaica and I was wondering if anyone knows where to point me. The aircraft is privately owned and operated. If allowed, is in the cabin or cargo a better place? The aircraft in question is a Citation I (500) Jet. Thanks for the heads up.

You can carry prist, but you need to fill out a hazmat form. We do it for 135 flights, but not too sure if you need the form for 91 or not. Wouldn't hurt just to CYA. We carry it in a metal tool box in the hell hole. (would not carry it in the cabin personally) It never hurts to have some if you fly in the islands. sometimes the prist injector breaks, and they you have to jump around to find some.

Let me tell you a little story:

About 20 years ago was flying a Lear 35 from FLL - CUN at night.

We had prist onboard back in the luggage area. We were talking enroute and slowly began to realize that we slurring our words. We donned our O2 masks after realizing there was a strong chemical odor coming from the back.

To make a long story short, one of the cans had discharged it's contents and we were the victims of near-incapacitation.

What is particularily nasty about prist? The propellant is ETHER!

We got approved through our F.S.D.O. to carry prist, in the cabin, stored in old military ammo cans. You can buy them through any Army/Navy surplus store. We still use them today, though we only operate 2 planes that need prist.

I ferry Part 91 jet/propjet aircraft across the Atlantic and as aprevious pilot noted: DO NOT CARRY IT IN THE CABIN. That stuff is dangerous and lethal, in Europe the ground crews can not even touch the stuff you have to do it.

A military amunition can will protect from explosion but not the gas released, the propellant is either (excuse spelling).

I carry 2-3 cans in the baggage compantment outside the cabin structure and in a airtight blast container. I also fill out a hazardous manifest but have never had to show it but rules change and its a good CYA.
