I'd Really Like to Know...
 
I'd like to know why people on this board are so against being a flight instructor? I was an instructor and still am. I am damned proud of it and my experiences resulting from it. As a CFII I gained more instrument knowledge doing it everyday than I did in the 135 world in a full year of 700 flying hours. I was also an MEI and got 500 multi hours in just over a year doing that. I will ALWAYS have a CFI, CFII, and MEI. I worked harder to earn those ratings and they paid more than any others to me (easily more important than my ATP.)
Take it from someone who's had his hound kicked around in the aviation world. If you want to move up quickly, just teach, enjoy the year or two that you do and move on, but when you start making the big bucks, remember what ratings got you there. The CFI, CFII, and MEI are my roots and I won't leave them behind.

Here-Here FuelJetA. Couldn't agree with you more. I have learned more life-long lessons obtaining my CFI and CFII, and now my MEI, out of any of my other ratings/certificates. All three are TRUE confidence builders, and not to mention...eye-candy on your resume.

I like that you changed your title to include the word "Sabresaurus" :)

I taxi past a company called Avmats every day at SUS. It's where Sabres, Jetstars and old Hawkers go to die, or be sold to some third world country. Make sure the vents work while fueling...

I'm a CFII, 750hrs. I average about 70hrs a month and I make more than some of my friends who are 1 year removed from college with an Aerospace engineering degree. I love flying more than anything, and I am content at age 22 making $40k and flying at least twice a day.

Man, 40K as a CFII. I wish I had made that kind of money instructing! What I have found in the Corporate world is that if you are not a formed Military guy (preferably fighters) then you aren't $#it. Seems like many of the corporate flight departments are ran by former military guys, and they look after thier own. It is a Military Mafia.
It is something I don't understand. How did all those hours of yanking and banking prepare them to fly straight and level at FL410. Never mind the fact that I have 1500 hours of real world multi-turbine PIC hours.

Flight Instructing
 
Most instructing jobs are low paying, high risk and highly competitive in nature. Try sitting in the CFI lounge for 14 hours a day like a bunch of used car salesmen waiting for the next victim to walk through the door. No fun !!!

Man, I don't know what it is with you. You either had the worst possible experiences in avaition, or you brought it on yourself with your cynical attitude. Do you approach everything in life with such angst? Or is it restricted to aviation?

I had some bad experiences in aviation and that places me in the majority. You must either be extremely lucky or Marry Poppins.

Just remember, fellow pilots... we are not the only ones that struggle with our everyday lives. There are so many individuals out there that could only dream of doing what we do. The diference is that we know how to make our dreams become reality, and when hard times come we say "bring it on" taking it the extra mile. We are all very unique individuals.

There was a time when I could boast that I was one of the last from my graduating college class who was still working as a pilot and following my dream. The rest were all successful and happy. Some dreams are best left as such.
