Default Dropping off a resume?

Hey all,

I found a job posting recently for a F.O. in part of a Fortune 100 company's flight department.

They did not advertise on their site, only on a pilot job board. The employer was listed as "confidential"
It took me some time, but I figured out what the company is, and to sum it all up, this is my dream job. It's the kind of job I've wanted since I started my PPL.
I applied with a specifically tailored cover letter on the job site, but I am going to go to their HQ tomorrow to drop off a resume packet.

1) Should I include a secondary cover letter associated with dropping off the resume, saying things like "I dropped this off because", etc. Tailored to saying I'm applying but stopped by, or just use the "i applied because" not mentioning stopping by?

2) Should I acknowledge with anything more than addressing it to the CP and the company that I figured it out, or does it just sound pretentious?

3)What should I include in the folder?
cover letter, resume, letters of rec, references and ?????? what else?

Also, I'm not sure if he has an office at the HQ, which is only 10-15 min from the airport. Should I call and ask if he is in? Would he likely have an asst/secretary for the department? Company has 3 new, large Falcons and a Sikorsky. Big department, big company. Should I call ahead or show up in the building lobby, and ask if I can drop off the resume?

I've dropped off resumes in person to a few charter ops, but never something quite like this.

Please help, any advice is welcome, I know this is a needle in a haystack, but I want to do absolutely everything to show that I want this job.

STOP.

The job is not listed on their own website? What does that tell you? The process starts with internally received resumes and then all must apply online. Sometimes this application time is left open for a week or two for the general public (lets face it these usually aren't getting far) or sometimes the application is opened just for a moment while a potential employee is directed there to quickly apply.

All the worthless pilot job boards simply cut and paste jobs from each other or indeed.com then charge giddy regional F/O's $10 to look at them....... The jobs could be 1 year old or they could be completely false. I'm not saying dont use these boards as tools if you have a few bucks to spend, just know what you see is not reality (most often)

DO NOT just drop by anyones headquarters or hangar. The days of hitting the bricks and shaking hands are not what they were. Its now a process to get a visitor into a hangar with airport access (TSA) and not always something people have time or want to do (check ID, sign you in, get you a badge, escort you etc)....so just be respectful and CALL and ask!.."Im a pilot looking for work and would like to drop off or send in a resume, are you hiring?"

Also, dont ever go to company "headquarters"...first of all you usually wont get past the lobby (again, security) and the people you may get to talk to wont even know there is such thing as a flight department. Its just not a shared/common interest thing in 99.9% of a large companies employees. I worked at a Fortune 5 department and whenever I went to non aviation places or events nobody even know we had airplanes (5 or 6 of them)

Make some calls or ask for specifics here, someone can likely point you in the right direction. Do you belong to NBAA and have their member guide? Thats a FAR FAR better way to spend a few bucks than the moronic pilot web/job/rumor/clown boards.

Reality is that without a good amount of experience and a solid internal rec you are a long shot...dont get me wrong, I would still apply!...just do it the right way.

Good Luck!

I tend to agree with NowCorporate - you'd be shooting yourself in the foot to go to their offices when they clearly didn't want anyone to know who they were.

I filter applicants for a 135 charter outfit and chances are unless you had an outstanding resume or something that otherwise stood you out from anyone else, I'd never even look at your resume a second time. Remember the list of resumes we get from those online sites is long enough as is, and the qualifications wide spread.

Focus on making your cover letter and resume as applicable as possible to the company you're applying for to give yourself the best chance. Those two pages are your only chance to make an impression with people who don't know you from the mail guy. But don't go knocking on their door when they didn't want people to know who they were in the first place.

If you have any questions, PM me.

I would tighten up/tone down your game here a bit also...

If you do get a decent corp gig interview and you say this you might get the BertStare....

I would ask you why you went to a Regional airline if a corporate position was your dream job since you started flying?...I'd also ask you why you never applied before if it was your dream job (maybe you did?)

No big deal, many make the move...just have a reasonable explanation.

I share the "dream job" tag line because it really is exactly that and I wanted anyone willing to lend some advice to know that's what I think of this opportunity.

Fair question. I had 262 TT when I got hired in '07, no CFI, only commercial ME. I was very lucky to get that job. I would have been stupid to turn down a 121 turbine gig because I wanted to fly corporate eventually. Now I have 10x the hours I did then, 90% of it turbine, transport, multi crew, and 2 type ratings. It was a gateway job to gain some great experience. Now I can realistically begin applying for the jobs I wanted from the beginning.

IMO, they'd be taking a risk investing in you... are they going to want your first captain spot to be in their Fortune 100 department? Perhaps, but they'll likely want to see some solid PIC time and preferably in a non-scheduled environment.

I'd encourage you to apply if there is a position open, and if it doesn't look good be sure to ask what sort of competitive experience they're looking for. Never hurts to establish a baseline and update your resume every year or so. Good luck.
