Default G550 or Global Express Type?

I have the opportunity to obtain a G550 or Global Express type rating and am trying to decide which aircraft will open more opportunities for contract flying. While I would have 0 time in type, I wonder if my 3000+ hours in the Challenger 850 will offset that if I were to get the BD700 rating. Conversely, there seems to be over 1000 variants of the G550 vs 250 BD700s in the USA, but less contractors available on the Global. I have extensive international experience as well.

Need to decide in a week! Thoughts and advice will be appreciated.

Sounds like you aswered your own question . I am on my last days at G550 school. I has been a tough road because I have a lot of Falcon time and have had to unlearn french and relearn american thinking. I really like the airplane. My company is also getting a G450, after my type ride, I get a 2 hour differences course. Try that with other manufacturers.

Quick question. Does the Global Express type (BBD-700) cover the 5000 or the XRS?

There is far fewer than 1000 G V/G550 produced; probably nearer 600. Both types have lots based overseas.

How is it you can get a type, but not a job? More demand for GLEX contract work, it seems. Not sure why.

The rating covers them all, the new Vision cockpit requires a 4 day difference course.

i would think the Global type would benefit you more based on various job boards, often having a need for Global contract pilots. That said i doubt your time in a CL-850 will directly translate in the matter you'd like. Insurance runs aviation and if they allow it then you'd be golden, hopefully you can convince them. Good luck!

From my experience, I say the G550. The G450/G350 transition is really nothing. Part 91 operators wouldn't care if you had the transition training. So basically you could have opportunities in the 550, 450, 350 and possibly the GV.

850 experience might help you somewhat, but Bombardier really built the Global from the ground up, so there's actually not much in common between the two types IMO. The BD-700 is a much more automated/computerized airplane from a systems standpoint then the CL-850/CRJ-200.

For example, once you finish the preflight pretty much all the systems you touch are the engine run switches, APU run switch, anti-ice and lights.

And the anti-ice switches can be left in AUTO after take-off. No even a pitot heat switch.

To the person that asked the BD-700 type covers all the global express aircraft that are made. The vision cockpit however does require a differences course.
There is a ton of contract work available on the Global right now, my company is paying 1500 a day for contractors.
The issue that you will have is that with zero time on the aircraft you might find some work, but it will be at the below average operators, and for 1000 a day or less.
