FSI Type Rating or in actual jet?
Greetings fellow aviators.
I am in need of a type rating and am deciding between going to Flight Safety for two weeks or doing the type rating in the actual jet I will fly. This would take about a week and I could do it at my home field without any travel. All of my previous type ratings have been at FSI (or other simulator schoolhouse). The costs are comparable. Does anyone have experience getting a type rating in the actual jet at your home field? If so, would you recommend this over FSI or other school house? The type rating is for an older jet.... Any thoughts or comments are appreciated. Thank you. |
A lot of 91/135 companies, as well as insurance companies prefer simulator-based training over the in-aircraft type ratings. Just an FYI.

If the cost is the same, go to FSI:
Established global reputation, no personal risk with regards to safety, able to learn the aircraft envelope in a highly controlled environment, likely easier to insure you. |
What airplane is being used for in-aircraft training these days? Even the old Lears and Citations have sims.

Go to Flight Safety... If you bust altitude in the sim while training or some other incident happens, you get your butt chewed by the instructor and move on.
You do that in the airplane and then what? |

I got a Lear Type rating the old way, in the actual airplane. I agree with the previous posts about simulator training though.
Not all insurance companies are the same either. Believe it or not, some still don't require an FO to go to a formal school to sit in the right seat part 91. HD |
