Contract Work
I've never done contract work so looking for an answer to this question.
If the owner is going to fly you in from out of state put you up have you fly a day trip then fly you back day after the trip would you be paid your daily rate for all three days? Or just the day you flew? |
Usually travel days are paid, at least on longer trips.

Any day that takes you away from home or a chance at another contract job should be paid the full rate.

I charge a full day regardless of flying, riding, drinking, etc…

What's the best way to get into contract flying? Also, do most guys run their contracts through their own company like an LLC?
|
Get furloughed is the best way I know how to get in it! Still trying to find the best way to get OUT of it!!!

Contract Flying
I got a lot of contract work via word of mouth. Don't sell yourself short charge for your time. If you charge by the day make sure you have agreed time on what "a day" is. XXX amount for 8-10 hours anything over 8-10 charge XXXX amount more. Also make sure they understand your limits. If you have 14 hour day and now its time to head home on two flight and everthing is down to mins throw out the fatigue card and they pay for hotel, food etc. Set the guidlines up front.. somewre great to fly with amd some not so great. Stress no questions asked if you delay/cancel for weather. Good luck

We pay full days pay for each calender day spent working, commuting or sitting. If one calender day includes a reset (very early start with 10 hours sitting in a day room to complete a late day return for example) we pay an extra half days pay.
Always good to clarify in advance. |
You should be getting the 3 days. All travel covered, they hired you, not the other way around.
A LLC does not protect personal assets if you were personally responsible in any accident/incident. However, if you employ someone under the LLC, the "victims" could go after the LLC's assets and the persons, but not yours. This is my general understanding from a few conferences I have attended(it was for farming, but it all applies). The presenter said use as many as needed to separate assets from each other. At least in Indiana, LLC's are flow through to the owner of the LLC as far as taxes are concerned, so unless there's some great manipulation, I don't know if there is any great tax advantage. I was told by someone if I had an LLC they wouldn't need to 1099 me. I am not sure how this would change anything unless you just don't report some of the income via the LLC. I would highly caution anyone's advice unless they were a CPA. I haven't consulted mine on this issue, but plan to this year. |
Other than word of mouth, are there any of the sites (bizjetjobs ect...)that seem to work better than others for getting your foot in the door?

Some companies have a rate for the day of travel (mine pays $200 on travel days), and full rate + per diem on any day you are with the jet. Just make sure it's all understood upfront. I recently did a contract job and had not done that, only to be taken advantage of.. I wrote it off as stupid tax for not following my own advice and assuming something. Happens often. The one I hate the most that I've seen, is a company telling you that they are interested in hiring you full time, but want you to fly a few trips with them to see how you work out. Then they try to under pay you, since you may become a future employee.. Never put up with this.. This is a company that will seek to take advantage of you around every turn..
