I'm a 121 guy and have been offered two corporate jobs and one for a Nascar driver Both corporate gigs were pretty good with one being about halfway up the Fortune 500 list. The Nascar gig had a horrible schedule.

Either way you get there, it's about who you know and who knows you.

I didn't apply or know the companies/driver was looking until they contacted me. I knew people who worked there and they thought I would be a good fit. Ultimately, I decided it wasn't what I wanted to do.

When they were offered, one was a Lear 55/35 and the other had several G-IVs. The Nascar was a Citation.

Hehehehe. No. I expressed everything I had to. Well...almost...
I saw in another thread someone saying in 121 it will take years to have the holidays off. I can tell you in 91 and 135 it will never happen. Seniority will not save you.
When comparing the two worlds, don't forget to compare safety statistics, and read about the reasons behind those.
Strange nobody wants to ever talk about that. Safety.
For everything else, search the previous debates, don't miss the testimonies of who flew both GA and Airlines.
RI830...I need rehab from APC...I could not resist...

Ahhhh, what the heck…

Part 91 - I've never had to work any of the major holidays. The one time the aircraft was flying on Christmas Day a contractor was used, no questions asked. He was paid 150% of our normal contractor rate which is already industry leading and likely the highest for our make and model.

As a matter of fact, more often then not the overwhelming majority of my friends in corporate aviation tend to have the major holidays off. Maybe 1 or 2 at most end up having to fly, but it's unusual. That being said, this is just "my" experience, and most of the people I am referring to are in very good Part 91 departments.

Part 135, yeah, you there is a good chance your flying Easter, Memorial, Labor, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.

Don't listen to this. This guy has just not been in the industry long enough. In 91 you will have to be fly or be on call during the holidays. Like I said, there are exceptions. When we fly on the holidays, and the owner stays, we have the option of staying and make it a small vacation, or airline back home.
But eventually in 121 you will hold seniority and be off. Not even scrambling to look for a contract pilot willing to fly the holidays.
You will, be off, really off, the phone will not be required to answer.
If Grum starts debating, refer to our previous debates.

Are they allowed to listen to me because I have also never worked a holiday at my corporate job and have friends at others that have worked very few holidays or none at all. Most of the guys I know that fly for airlines work a lot of holidays, and when I flew for one I worked every major holiday. But I'm sure you will tell me I don't know what I'm talking about or some other nonsense because it doesn't fit your narrative.

You worked for a regional and you were not senior enough to have holidays off. If you want another "airline vs corporate discussion" all my opinions, and most valuably the opinions of guys that have been in both words, refer to other threads.
Now for both worlds, I intend to compare career destinations: good corporates and major airlines, not 135 and regionals. These last two are only time builders, with very few exceptions.
So I recommend to read those expert opinions to who wants to start an aviation career.
You don't qualify as such. Neither do I, at least not yet.
You can testify for something that was asked in the opening statement, you hold a corporate job (which I assume you consider a good one) and you do come from the airlines. So yes, good corporate departments hire ex airlines, the other way around is more rare as only very few majors hire ex corporate.
Thank you for helping the thread without knowing, Red Forman.

I think when it comes to flying part 91 if you fly for an owner you will probably fly a lot of holidays. If you fly for a company that only uses the airplanes for business, then you won't work holidays (and very few weekends) because the employees you are flying around don't want to be away from home on weekends or holidays. That's my take from personal experience and what I have seen from others.

I personally fly for a family and we spend all holidays at home.
We may fly them to some locale on Christmas or Thanksgiving eve but we repo home.

My dad has been a corporate pilot for 40+ years. I've been around for 24 of those years.

Not once has he been away on a major holiday -- New Years, July 4th, Thanksgiving, Christmas. Not once. If one of the execs wants to spend the holidays somewhere then the pilots will fly them out and either repo home are be airlined home, several days before the holiday at that.

Oh, he also gets 42 days of vacation pay per year along with a pension and a salary that rivals that of a legacy captain.

To top all that off he usually works no more than 15 days a month and doesn't have to carry his phone around with him when he's not scheduled. This is without having to wait 10+ years of seniority in order to hold that.

Sorry NoSidNoStar, it's not as grim as you make it sound. If your so unhappy in corporate aviation why are you still in it?

Surely you realize that is an uncommon corporate job. Your father is very fortunate
