Default RAF Leuchars

Has anyone ever been to Leuchars Air Base in Scotland. Apparently they allow GA operators but I am having trouble reaching anyone. If anyone has any experience or contact information. I called the number on there website and they tell me to send an email. Haven't heard a response in four days.

We used a while back, I didn't crew it. I did hear it was very expensive and hours restricted.if I find out anything tomorrow, I'll post it.

I read they were closing the RAF base there this summer and converting it to an Army post. I know the Typhoons left for good a couple months ago. That might be the problem you're having with communication.

I spent many a summer there when I was in the Training Corps,

As mentioned above the RAF is pulling out. Dont recall ever seeing any GA there, but its been 10years now so things might have changed

*Edit - Air Training Corps = Kind of British version of Air Force ROTC

I flew all my basic flight training in the University Air Squadron at RAF Leuchars. Them were the days! In the years that I flew in and out of leuchars (20 years ago) there were no civilians allowed.

The RAF base was closed by the MOD and so I'd be surprised if there was any allowance for civies to fly in there.

I've got some contacts back there. I'll check with them and then report back.

BTW Dundee is your closest alternate and only about a 30 minute drive to St Andrews if that is your goal.

I was able to get ahold of the base. They allow GA traffic Monday-Friday 8-5 local. Got a slot time for arrival and departure. They provided me a PPR to get in. It took them a while to get back to me. Appreciate everyone's help.

Glad you got the information and I'm really surprised they let civies in there, good to know. I really miss flying there. It's a great spot, enjoy. Not sure if it is still good or not but the Guardbridge Inn used to do good afternoon bar meals in a beer garden with decent beer. It's about 5 miles from the base. You'll be rolling the dice at this time of year if it is beer garden weather or not.

We are in Leuchars and Dundee all the time. If you have any issues PM me and I can get you solid contacts. Make sure you stay in St. Andrews, Dundee leaves much to be desired.
