Glad they got out. Do these guys (Erickson)have maintenance issues?

No. Erickson has an excellent reputation.

I saw two MD-80’s with Erickson livery parked at a heavy repair station at KGYR recently.

The MD-80's are another matter.

The MD-80's have had a difficult track record with a number of flame-outs and other concerns, ingesting retardant in the engines on drops; they are also required to drop with the gear out, which isn't common for tanker operations.

Curious why they need to leave the gear down.

Short answer is that it's required by the supplemental type certificate.

The FAA denied an Erikson request to do a flap-40 gear-up drop configuration a couple of years ago.

The MD80's were still doing gear-down drops as of last summer fire season, but have hoped for approval to do gear-up this year.
