I haven't read of any planned "mandates"? It's always been phrased something like these groups will be "offered" it first. On a related note our CEO (B6) explicitly said no employ would be required to get it.

I do think most people will take it as long there is no shenanigans. If people like Fauci, Scott Gottlieb (form FDA chief), Tom Frieden (former CDC chief), etc, take it that will be good enough for me.

It will be mandatory for health-care workers, and I suspect other first-responder types. Vaccines are often mandatory in schools, day care, kids camps, etc.

Typically, a vaccine is more for YOUR protection. But in some cases, and covid is one those, vaccination is as much for the protection of others. Since the emphasis will be on protecting others, I think we'll see vaccination mandated for many people who have contact with the general public, if for no other reason than employer liability, although that depends on how the fed (or maybe some states) ultimately treats legal liability WRT covid. The ambulance chasers of course want presumptive fault for any and all covid infections, and that would usher in vaccination mandates like you've never before imagined.

At least one US airline already has a vaccine mandate as a condition of employment so I don't think there's any legal showstoppers for that. Although in that one case, you need the vaccination to get hired in the first place, so it may be different to apply that to current employees.

Some pilots may get off the hook since they don't do much customer interaction (or at least they don't really have to), but anyone who flies international (including Hawaii) is probably going to need it to clear customs. Even if they don't make their own citizens get a vaccine, most foriegn governments will almost certainly require inbound aliens to have one.

Maybe if you don't want to get vaccinated, they'll let you flow back to their regional so you can stick with (mostly) domestic flying.

Some things have to be sold to the public to make people willing, they can’t be ordained. Otherwise, they can be tied up in courts forever.

The sticking point there was the approval status of the vaccine (ie experimental). So far it looks like any (US) covid vaccines will be fully certified.

Lots of uncertainty right now, bit I'm willing to go out on a limb a bit and guarantee you that military personal will get mandatory covid vaccines, and will not find any recourse from the judicial system. Covid is a clear and present danger, not a hypothetical like weaponized anthrax.

I will agree about the military. But even there, you and I both know what an utter pain in the ass it was just to get people to take their flu shots. And that was with an Article 15 hanging over their heads. The civilian world is a different critter though.

My plan B is to be an Uber driver, Realtor, and a flight instructor. Gonna do all 3. The uber driving is helping offset the C19 paycuts since March. Having to drive on all my days off to keep things working. Unfortunately I am having to care for my elderly mother and geriatric care is quite expensive. Happy to do it, but it is what it is. All the other costs have been cut to the bone.

I think everyone needs a personal plan B that doesn't involve another concessionary contract forcing (requesting) the senior pilots give too much. ALPA should remember those in the more senior categories have already worked through the post vietnam ovrerstaffed and deregulated 80's, draggin arse and spinned off 90's, and the post 911 lost decade. We're still waiting for our pay day.

Good article, makes sense. I'm sure if this becomes industry standard, my company would follow. I would have to think though that no one will mandate it under Emergency Authorization use. Only after trials are fully complete...I would think anyway..

And how many diseases exist that they we have NEVER made a successful vaccine for?

like HIV, hep C, Cytomegalovirus, Chikungunya, respiratory syncytial virus, among many others...?

HIV is a special case, it's eats immune system cells to reproduce... so stimulating an immune response is problematic, fuel on the fire so to speak.

There's a good pharma cure for Hep C, maybe that gutted the potential vaccine market?

Those two are also transmitted almost exclusively via risky personal behavior (drugs, unprotected sex) so they are not really a catastrophic global pandemic, so there's never been quite anything like the same urgency as covid.

I haven't even heard of the others you mentioned, so they're probably not getting tens or hundreds of billions of government funding thrown at them either.
