Valneva doing phase-3 trials, a little late to the party but this is the only Western vaccine using old-school inactivated virus technology.

Looks like someone was speaking a bit out of turn.

“In my opinion, we can now say it, it is clear that there is an association (of the brain blood clots) with the vaccine. However, we still do not know what causes this reaction,” Marco Cavaleri, chair of the vaccine evaulation team at the EMA, told Italian daily Il Messagero.
Cavaleri provided no evidence to support his comment.

Europe’s drug regulator has denied it has already established a causal connection between the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine and a rare blood clotting syndrome, after a senior official from the agency said there was a link.
In a statement to Agence France-Presse, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) said on Tuesday it had “not yet reached a conclusion and the review is currently ongoing”, adding that it expected to announce its findings on Wednesday or Thursday.

Regulators think clotting issue is very rare, enough so that the AZ vaccine is safer than not getting vaccinated. UK recommends that this vaccine not be given to people under 30 if possible. AZ vaccine is important for the developing world, since it doesn't require the cold-chain of some other vaccines.

It would be unusual indeed to find a pharmaceutical with NO risk. We use a lot of medications - especially some antibiotics and sulfa drugs - that have rare but very severe reactions. The key issue is for the reward to be greater than the risk. For the young right now that’s a more difficult call than it is for your average 60 year old.

China considering mixing vaccines to enhance efficacy. They have four indigenous vaccines, but their efficacy is a bit lower than some of the Western vaccines, especially for new variants...
