100%, I know what you meant—I just wanted to make it crystal clear for anyone reading who may be on the fence about it. Cheers!

My friend is the County Coroner where I live and he told me last month. We had only a small number of Coronavirus deaths but suicides have greatly increased. He did not say why thats just the raw numbers.

Just some anecdotal evidence, but in my area I'm still on a waitlist to drive instacart- I downloaded the app maybe 3 weeks ago now. Yes I know there's other jobs out there, but when there's too many people turning to instacart, that says a lot about the overall health of the economy.
Just something to consider, people who have been airline pilots even living within their means are freaking out about how they'll be able to pay for anything. Forget a flying job, the new challenge is even finding ANY job.
Is anyone else experiencing or hearing similar stories?

Haven’t really seen an uptick in suicides here—yet, anyway. I have noticed more calls for EDPs (emotionally distressed persons), as we call them. Also seemingly more intox calls.
That said, if it’s an obvious death via suicide, we (FD) usually won’t get called—it immediately becomes a medical examiner case. So there may be more suicides that I don’t know about.
We did have an uptick in suicides during the Great Recession. Some of them were absolutely tragic. I hope we don’t return to that.
As for jobs, I don’t know how it is right now. I stopped looking a while back. The market sucked.

Considering unemployment is higher than the great recession and the lockdown seems to have no end, my guess is we're going to have a much higher suicide rate. Financial experts are saying the unemployment rate will be worse than the first great depression.
Something else to consider is that fire arm sales are through the roof and picking up pace. Not sure how many are being bought out of fear vs how many are going to be used by people with no hope of a future.
I'll add that it's interesting you monitor EDPs. How new of a metric is that? My guess is that it's only a few decades old, because mental health before used to be "man up" so to speak.

I’m a volunteer, so I don’t get paid to do the best job in the world haha. Outside of the dept political bs, it’s great...although the groupies aren’t as plentiful as they used to be!
We call them EDPs somewhat unofficially—it’s become a non-PC term as of late. We use it as a generic umbrella term. They come over the air under a variety of names: mental aided, suicidal threat/ideation, psychological episode, etc. I don’t have access to our official statistics, but it certainly seems like they’re becoming more common, especially in conjunction with intoxes. Every area has its ‘frequent fliers’ but these have been new. That’s about as deep into it as I can go without getting close to angering the HIPAA gods.
Be safe out there, and please take care of yourselves and each other.
