If China wins vaccine race!
If China wins the vaccine race, they will achieve global political domination. We will be indebted to them in so many ways. Checkmate

Currently the three companies in final Stage III trials are looking good.
Because the US has given the go ahead to mass produce the vaccines “at risk”, they will have over 100 million vaccines for the United States, before the end of the year. That is enough for one third of the entire US population by Christmas. As more get approved early next year, more will be vaccinated. Massive.
Like the Sauk polio vaccine for kids in the mid 1950s. And, just like that, new polio cases went to near zero in this country. (Old enough to remember the mass vaccinations.)
Medical professionals and high risk (like nursing home patients) first. Then I will be early in line. Travel. Borderline into an elevated risk. Please, wave hand, pick me.

Yeah, seriously. If China is first to develop a vaccine that has harmful side effects or low efficacy, the premises of this thread is garbage.

Because perception is reality and the damage has been done. Most new information about Covid is accepted/dismissed by the public along strict political and ideological lines. Sadly. It's now a mostly political wedge issue. The only way to stamp it out in a meaningful way is a successful vaccine. I think even the existence of a good vaccine will go a long way.

The vaccine race isn't a "winner take all," you have to find a way to distribute it to your entire domestic population, which is over 1B people in China. If they can do that AND distribute it to the world, then yeah, we're probably effed and all of the isolationists will get exactly what they wanted. You can't 'lead' the world only when it's convenient and we've done a lot geopolitically to alienate ourselves lately. Foreign aid for example, doesn't exist because our government is warm, fuzzy, I-saw-a-kid-starving-to-sad-music, nice guys, it's because giving Country A that money is cheaper than military, economic, or diplomatic actions to get them to do what we want, which monetarily benefits us more than doing nothing. To think otherwise is just naive. And that's just foreign aid. We also ****ed off NATO, Japan's SDF, withdrew from the WHO, Paris Accords, etc. What message does that send to the rest of the world? Hopefully, not that their 'leader' has decided to hold everyone back and needs to be replaced or ignored, because you personally may not take the Paris Accords, or WHO, or NATO seriously, but the majority (if not all) of the rest of the developed world does.
