It’s like they’re self destructing.

Your buddy is not at all exaggerating...

Hawaii is still stuck in April with Covid headlines occurring all day every day. They are still making a point to say "Employee at xxx tests positive" Literally they are making news headlines over single random cases.

They spent today's big reopening announcement (groups of 5 allowed.. woohoo) patting each other on the back for coming up with a color coded matrix that a 12 yr. old could probably put together. Basically, by December, groups of 10-25 might be able to gather.. No outdoor organized sports (sorry kids) until probably December.. And the typical 25%-50% open stores with social distancing blah, blah, blah.....

They basically said they followed California... They seriously haven't had an original thought of their own, and no ideas that have panned out even an ounce... (Tahiti has been able to pull off what HI cannot)

Totally not exaggerating when I say this State is a dumpster fire. Violent crime is on a dramatic rise, homelessness is even more rampant, burned out cars are very common. Small towns are completely boarded up without tourists there to support them.

The Honolulu Mayor is now just saying that the economy has to be a consideration because of destroying family and lives...

It’s a massive escalation. For comparison, from March through July, HPD issued only 9,465 coronavirus-related citations, according to the court’s log. The busiest month was April with 5,648 citations.

Fast forward to now: Officers handed out 5,000 citations just last weekend, Mayor Kirk Caldwell said this week.

The mountain of citations illustrates how Caldwell has embraced the police department as a tool for addressing the pandemic. However, his strategy is causing anger and stress among residents.

“This is very abusive,” said Patrick Steinemann who was cited in Kailua last month when he was riding through a park by himself. “This is detrimental to people’s health, and it makes no sense.”

A review of court records yielded numerous citations that seem to have little to do with protecting public health.

Officers have issued citations to individuals walking alone outside, parents at the beach with their own children and to homeless people who live outdoors. One man was pulled over for an alleged traffic violation, his citation shows. When officers asked him where he was going, he said he was just “driving around.” He was cited for engaging in nonessential activity.

The narrative descriptions on some citations document innocuous activity.

“While on routine patrol, I observed a female exercising inside Waipio Neighborhood Park,” one officer wrote. “Female was stopped and cited for park closure.”

Everyone who receives a citation gets a court date, which can be attended via Zoom. People found in violation are guilty of a misdemeanor, which is punishable by a fine of up to $5,000, up to a year in jail or both.

Another news outlet revealed emails between HPD leaders... One HPD head was not happy with how few citations were being issued. (apparently the Covid Task Force is a voluntary overtime job paid by CARES ACT dollars, thus they want results) Apparently they wanted more citations per officer per day... Que Granny getting a citation for sitting on a bench, or an elderly couple getting a citation for eating takeout in their car at a boat launch.

The reason Caldwell made beaches and parks single person only, was to be able to police it... (paraphrasing his own words) It had nothing to do with data or science relating to Covid.

My personal favorite is citing homeless outdoors... Yeah that'll teach 'em!!!

Hawaii is as close to a police State as they get. Scare the people with headlines and social media and they will turn on each other faster than a you can say Covid.

Sounds like Melbourne Australia. Still stuck in April. Claiming a second wave....run hide...... but in fact they haven't had a first wave yet.

It’s going to take decades to fix the disaster that is entirely self inflicted by incompetent government.

If this is true, I have to find a new place. Hawaii won’t be the same for decades.
it's beautiful. I've never felt less welcome as a visitor of anyplace I've ever been.

Thanks for chiming in here. I’ve been super curious as to what the locals have been thinking lately. I myself in California went through the, “Hey this is great!...Ok, I’m bored now....Oh crap, my job...Oof this is gonna hurt” phases, and so I imagined maybe that’s how it has gone for locals. Interesting to see that they too, have had enough. I’d love to get your perspective on HAL. I really haven’t heard anything about them. Being such a huge employer, will the state bail them out again?
