It may have started a month or two before it was noticed, but that doesn't mean it didn't start in Wuhan (it did).
We weren't looking for it until AFTER it blew up in Wuhan, and a tiny handful of people getting generic "flu-like symptoms" (or maybe no symptoms) wouldn't stand out. Even officials in Wuhan didn't believe it at first. It was likely circulating a bit earlier there as well.

Wouldn’t this mean the number people that actually have had it so far could be tens of millions more in the U.S. alone? 3 months of free spreading. Though, wouldn’t health professionals have noticed the increase in daily deaths? Also, it doesn’t matter anymore anyway. The damage is done. There’s no going back, we’ve all collectively committed to sheltering till the vaccine.

I dislike linking to Twitter, but here's a nearly 8 minute report on Jake Tapper's CNN show about leaked internal Chinese documents about the early days of the outbreak; there's a link in the tweet to a long CNN article.

I'm not stating unequivocally that patient zero was in Wuhan, for all I know he could have come from Mcmurdo Station in Antarctica where he caught it from an archeological dig containing an alien spaceship.
But Wuhan sure looks like where it got traction, and spread out to the world. The precise timeline is unclear.

No surprise. I grossly underestimated the potential of this thing based on news out of China (and the fact that previous modern epidemic waves tend to break on our shores).
Lesson learned for next time.
