They didn’t fully understand asymptomatic spread back then but, yes, they also wanted to discourage a run on N95s. Fauci was in line with the CDC, NIH, surgeon general, etc. when he went on 60minutes.

It’s unfortunate that low information folks like to use videos like this to discourage mask usage today….something even Fox News now admits is effective.

Wearing a mask will not prevent you from generating infectious aerosols while you are shedding active virus. They also won't prevent you from inhaling infectious aerosols of Covid.

Yeah, and I criticized them back then too when they did it. Public Health and Preventive Medicine have always depended for their effectiveness on their credibility. They could have simply told the TRUTH, that China manufactured the vast majority of the N95 masks we used in this country and they had literally recalled their ships in mid-Pacific to meet their own needs and that we needed people to use cloth mask substitutes and not hoard N95 masks that were needed by healthcare workers who were at greatest risk. But instead of appealing to the public for assistance and sacrifice they decided to slip one by the rubes. They created their own problem by destroying their own credibility.

For that alone they should have been fired and replaced by people with integrity.

Oh please, they’re just using it to politicize the pandemic. How can there still be skeptics 8 months later? We now know masks work and save lives so what’s the problem? Fauci just accepted the position under Biden, let’s see how he does under a more accepting administration.

Masks help prevent the spread by 50 to 90%. At the very least they allow for a much smaller viral load spread.

Those numbers are based on salt droplet spread in a simulation, completely unrelated to aerosols, and also unrelated to the spread of Covid.

Maybe 90% for medical professionals for wear the mask right and do all the other things.
