This all reminds me of an episode of Top Gear when Jeremy Clarkson was talking about his two friends, one from CA, the other from Germany:
CA: "what if you drove without a license"
German: "oh, that's impossible, you cannot drive without a license."
CA: "yeah, but what if you DID"
German: "IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE WITHOUT A LICENSE"

CA has gone off the rails. At the beginning of this thing when we didn't know anything about the virus, I get it. But the idea is that as we learn more, we relax restrictions where they aren't necessary as a part of an iterative problem solving process. In true CA form, they're just rolling out tons of CYA over-regulation without thinking about the consequences.

Go look at freight ads for O/Os that have “No California Loads”. The CARB regulations and stops are so bad that rates to the East Voast from CA are about $10,000 during the summer slack season.

I don’t doubt these numbers and sorry to read them…I used numbers from 2015 since I liked how the nhtsa presented data and I couldn’t find a slide like that for any later years. But my overall point is the under 65 covid deaths still command respect.

I agree. My point was just that we haven’t solved but nonetheless survive other things of equal or greater magnitude. Doesn’t mean I approve of opiate abuse, but stopping it has sure befuddled our society. Yet we’ve adapted to it and life goes on.
