As a person who had more than a little insight into the National response from March until September of last year, I tend to pretty much discount that our response was flubbed. Certainly very tactical and immensely politicized, but flubbed is mostly a function of a media attempting to write an outcome, versus any real assessment of the competing issues at every policy decision that was made, with these decisions often being made daily/hourly.

Under the then SECTREAS, there was tremendous advocate for not burning down the economic house to save it with health policy prescriptions that were pretty draconian, with really unknown probabilities of efficacy. Then in classic DC fashion, the answer for losers in the policy arena was to leak to the press, whine and ask for second and third bites at the apple. All the while, they were focused on stuff like what the President was calling the virus publicly.

The 100 day mask mandate was never advertised (to my knowledge) as a “wear a mask for 100 days then go back to licking door knobs” plan. I don’t see how saying we might have to wear masks for another year negates the 100 day mask mandate. So yeah, I was wondering what the source of that was.

What was once 100 days is now 365 days. Why is that difficult for you to understand?

it’s not that it was rescinded, it’s that it was not a “100 day” mask mandate it is a “indefinite” mask mandate. masks should absolutely not persist after everyone in the US has been given a chance at vaccine which will likely be May/June of this year.

Not even close. As others have already said - "30 days to flatten the curve" is not the same thing as "all the schools/restaurants are closed indefinitely".

If it helps your understanding, when you put a timeline on something (wear masks for 100 days) the implication is that after 100 days you don't have to do that anymore.

It's like saying "Oh, I see you loaded a STAR into the FMC - once we land and taxi in and power down, that will drop out of the box". See, that's what we said would happen, so it happened. WTF????
