Default MD-88 vs 717

I was wondering if anyone that's flown both could give some information regarding the "servicability" of the 717 compared to the 88. The 88 is def showing her age lately and I'm just wondering if the 717 is just lipstick on a pig, or a genuinely better redesigned aircraft. Basically, how do you like the 717 compared to the mad dog and what are some of the things too look out for in the 717.

Thanks in advance.

5,700 hours on the MD88 and almost 2800 hours on the B717. The only thing better on the 88 is the anti-fog system. Every other system and characteristic is "hands down" better. You can trust it to do what you want it to do. It slows down and comes down in a similar fashion to the 727 which makes it fun to fly. It is quiet. It is like MD fixed everything wrong on the 88 and built the 717 just in time for Boeing to kill it.

Things to avoid on the 717? Avoid 5 leg days and ROA.

Never flew the 88. The 717 is a great airplane. It has a CRAZY variety of flying much like the -88.

It has legs to do DTW-MIA and DEN-CVG. However, they are complimented by some 25 min flights as well (ATL-AGS and DTW-GRR).

The -88 pilots I've flown with rave about the 717, however the twitch that they develop from their time in the -88 doesn't go away.

Great airplane. Variety of flying. Nice cockpit. Excellent VNAV and LNAV. The only complaint is the wing, the wing is too small and it's noticible in crosswinds especially. More wing and it'd be a great jet.

Interested to see what the CSeries does to our "coast to coast" route map.

Agree with the previous poster. Stay away from 5 leg days and it's a great airplane.

Roanoke?! You obviously haven't discovered "The Cube" at The Lucky Bar, followed by a Jack Brown's burger.

Mmmm...Jack Brown's...
They have one in CHO too. Another good 717 destination.

It's an involuntary twitch. A momentary full body spasm that they experience during times of calmness.

Here is an animation of how it looks:

It depends on what you came from.

If you came off of the DC-9/MD-88 you will think it is awesome.

If you came off of the A320/E170/B777 you will not be very impressed.

The 717 tends to go senior to the 88/90 even though it pays less.....that pretty much says it all.

Somewhat disagree. Loved the A320, but I rate the 717 and 320 about the same. Better (roomier) cockpit on the 320 but a sterile hand flying experience. 717 is great flying with actual visuals from 20 miles out. I appreciate both airplanes.

Flew the 777 as well; it was the balls. But is doesn't go anywhere I want to go.
