Mil guy new to all this but just wondering if commuting to Atlanta, the MD and the 717 both are about the same as far as time to hold a line, upgrade, and other QOL factors that i dont know about...guessing with a lower SSN it will be one or the other for me

You guys will learn very quickly how to optimize your bidding. The MD88 is the best airplane to get overtime flying on reserve days off, which we call "Green Slips" which hearkens back to the day of schedulers using colored sheets of paper to assign flying. When you get a Green Slip on an off day it is paid over and in addition to your guaranteed pay on reserve AND YOU GET A PAYBACK DAY AND REST.

The payback day and rest are the most important part. The goal is to get a little bow wave of payback days pushed ahead of you on your schedule so you are essentially flying on your off days, getting paid extra and creating more payback days.

When I was on the MD88 I spent more than 3 months doing nothing but green slips. :-)

In the 7-8 months I was on reserve there were only 2 days I wasn't used.... your mileage may vary.

Don't forget the best part! You get to fly with a lot of "interesting" captains!

I found coming from the CRJ to the 88 was quite easy! Going from no autothrottles to ones that sort of work is actually a great thing. You're used to riding them and making sure they do what you want them to do!

Mid 2016 hire here. I was on reserve for one month and a line holder ever since. Sitting nearly 50% now. I've had off every holiday since I've been here; I worked Xmas but was done before 11am. I now generally do 3 day trips with weekends off. The seniority progression is unreal. The Mad Dog can be hot but is still a dream come true compared to a hot Saab, Brasilia, or ATR.

The best thing about the category in ATL is it's massive size. If you get a crappy trip that you don't want, there is almost always someone else who treasures your trash. I've been amazed with some of the pilot swaps and blind swaps that I've had come through.

Respect the Mad Dog, but definitely don't fear her. Welcome to Big D!

YMMV
