DL to fly IND-CDG 7ER
#21
I know we were at least initially paid for the PIT-CDG route years ago, are we still? That airport is coming into significant cash right now and making some good growth again as a non hub airport. They are openly searching for more international. They now have Reykjavík with WOW, and Frankfurt with Condor. AMS or LHR would be a great addition.
I asked a networking guy a few months back about any future expansion though, he basically told me to keep dreaming.

I doubt we will see DL PIT-LHR/AMS, because of the competition and demand for TATL out of PIT. If anything the season for the PIT-CDG route will be expanded. EI is interested in opening up PIT-DUB this year or next, so if that happens that will shut the door on any more DL TATL from PIT for a while.
Right now, based on KnotSoFast's comment I see IND, AUS, MCO, and RDU being focus cities. With maybe CMH, TPA, and a few others being under consideration as well.

No, the incentives were for two years at a max of $9 million. $5 million came in the first year, but I don't know how much came in the second year. I believe the flight was year-round until the subsidies expired, now it has been trimmed back to 5x weekly from late May to September due to low demand.

I wouldn't rule out PIT as a focus city. PIT-BOS is starting up, PIT-RDU would be a good add and PIT-SEA is still unserved by anyone.

I was told the PIT-SEA is the type of route they are considering once the C series is on board. That was several months ago though so who knows. PIT-RDU is currently served by American, and anytime I have tried to get on a flight I have been in the jumpseat or last cabin seat. Seems plausible to add those routes. They are missing service to SLC and LAX on delta at least.

PIT doesn't have service to SEA/LAX/SLC, which isn't necessarily a bad thing...

"The Indiana Economic Development Corp. is offering Delta up to $5.5 million in conditional incentives over the next two years, based on how many passengers are on the flights.
IEDC spokeswoman Abby Gras said Delta can earn up to $3.5 million in incentives in the first year and up to $2 million in the second if the airline meets agreed-upon passenger goals. The more people take the flights, the more Delta can earn."
Sounds like government subsidies to me. Funny, I thought that's what all the ME3 fuss was about.
Smaller numbers? Sure. Same principles apply though if the Big Three expect to be able to occupy the moral high ground.

Seems the difference is between an unconditional governmental subsidy to sustain general operations of an otherwise financially unsustainable airline vs an incentive payment program to an otherwise highly profitable airline based upon specific city service initiation and achieving traffic growth objectives.
Lets call it welfare vs workfare.

If you still don't understand, read BobZ's post again.
If neither of those work, I can't help you.
