I'm very junior in category but can hold a line. I'm looking to get Dec 23-26 off somehow, and am willing to work any other day of the month to make this happen. I'm thinking APD may be the way to go. Any other techniques?
Not trying to avoid work but we have a huge family commitment over those days. How have other guys been successful when bottom of the barrel?

Yeah I saw that, but it's not a blackout date, just a date where they can deny even without reserve coverage. I read another conversation where some guys got APD for Christmas.

Thats 1 way. You are in a base that offers greatest pool of trips.
Downbid priorities of late xmas day departure may get you the first days of your window off. Or start on 25th with dh to msp.
For future reference...have standing vac move up if its an annual holiday thing. Never know what you might get.

Vacation wasn't an option this time unfortunately. Are you saying APD could work for someone pretty junior?

I'll probably try to do that next year but it's not an option this year, unfortunately. What are my chances of getting APD approved? Does anyone swap into Christmas? I don't care about New Year (though I'm likely to get both scheduled).

Hugely mistaken concept about APDs. They are not mandatory blackout dates. The PWA simply says the company can deny an APD regardless of reserve coverage; not that that it will be denied automatically.
I successfully used mine for a Dec 25-26 trip last year. It processed and was approved during the first PCS run for that month.
Also of note, APDs are processed before regular PDs.
