You can get out of the seat lock for your first upgrade. So if he tried 330B and didn’t like it he could bid to 717A before the two years, but they’d take what’s left of the 330B lock on to the 717A seat lock.

As a 330 guy that sits short call from home, it's pretty awesome so far. Haven't seen a summer yet, but talking with some of the guys, they were used pretty extensively last summer. If able, I'll likely bid a line for greater flexibility. Reserve in the winter has been fairly cush. If you're junior, you have to be ok with AMS, AMS and more AMS. I try to avoid 6 days as they wear me out. 3 days are great and easily manageable wrt to your body clock.
Having ran the numbers, it's just not worth it to jump to 717A. After the tax man takes his cut, it really isn't much of a pay raise, for the responsibility. I would check out the 330B for a while, if you don't like it you could always jump to 717A. My guess is you won't want to after expericening the international lifestyle...provided you can handle the body clock stuff. I plan on staying until I have good seniority on the 320A/73NA.

Most qualified pilots on the 350 are going to be cruise dummies for the forseeable future. If there is actually a leg that doesn't have an LCP on it doing TOE, it will be rare. I would think that FOs for the most part won't see a landing for a long, long time. Recency in sims for everybody will be the norm for awhile. If you just want to ride around and get paid, the 350 is a good gig. If you want to operate the controls, notsomuch.

I took the upgrade on the 717A instead of 330B. Being junior on both I knew I would be working mostly all weekends and holidays anyways so why not get the additional $50/hr more? I'm one that goes for max pay when Im at work. I flew red-eyes for years and I had no interest in the international flying.
The "hard work" of the NB flying is greatly overrated in my opinion. Anyone who flew at the regionals had it way harder than any NB flying here. Just my opinion. I don't regret the decision for a second.
