I think the real question is where to draw the line on what private citizens are allowed to possess. Handguns and hunting rifles are okay. Spears and shields are okay. Machine guns are not okay. Nuclear weapons are not acceptable. Where the line in between those should be is the debate. A weapon that fires rounds at 3,000 fps might not be safe. Especially when there seem to be quite a few mass shootings with them.
It’s not really a political issue. Or a phobia issue. But of course people make it one.
