Default 777 touchdown VS?

Hi. What is the -VS at touchdown on the T7 with CATIII autoland?

Some say -500 FPM...It seems a little hard compared to other heavies.

Thanks.

That's crushing it I'd think.

Good deal...But doesn't the 737 and 747 contact at about -100/-200 fpm?

Depending on the distance the force is dissipated over, 500fpm would be around 1.5 to 2g’s. Last hard landing on my fleet showed slightly less than 500fpm descent rate, no flare, deceleration at impact was approximately 2.1g.

In other words, if a 777 autolanded at max landing weight at 500fpm, it would likely be considered a hard landing and require an inspection.

Not aware of a number published for Autoland for 757, 767, 747-400 or 747-8 regarding descent rate at touchdown (AFM, FCOM, FCTM). No knowledge of 777 however. Autoland descent rate is minimal at best.

Well... A quick Google revealed this is a hot topic for PC flight simulator folks flying the 777. So I stopped looking.

Wow, you're so cool.

God forbid we nurture the enthusiasm of young people interested in the profession. I'm glad I didn't run into people like you when I was young and asking to visit the cockpit on my flights.

OP, I don't fly the 777 so, unfortunately, I can't really answer your question specifically. I've never looked at the VSI while I was in the flare but If I had to guess I'd say that somewhere between 100-300fpm would be a normal touchdown rate. That's a complete guess on my part, though.

There was a time that newbies actually went out to airfields. I think if you paid for a ride and asked the pilot to hold 500' down V/S on landing, the question would be moo.

On the old 373-300, you could get the ACARS to print out the G-loading at touchdown. I think the highest that I ever saw was 1.21, and that was just about a tire flattener.

Anything less than 1.05 was a good landing, and 1.01 was a great landing.

It was even sometimes possible to get a reading of 0.998 on rare occasions. Note that the G reading came from the IRS, which was located in the avionics bay, not at the CG.

500 fpm translates to roughly 6 mph, ride your Harley into a brick wall. Should be enough evidence there.
